Grants and Writing Resources for American Public University
At the American Public University System's 30th commencement in May 2026, an APU graduate was among the students named for the Academic Scholar Award. A second APU graduate received the Mary Kim Ward Resilience and Service Award. The system also includes American Military University, and its Class of 2026, counting both universities, had 23 doctoral graduates and more than 4,300 master's graduates.
Honors at Graduation
The university calls the Academic Scholar Award one of its highest academic honors. Each year the Academic Awards Committee can select one undergraduate and one graduate student from each academic school. Associate and bachelor's students need a 3.70 cumulative GPA and master's students a 3.90. The application includes a faculty letter, a résumé, a short reflection or two-minute video, and one strong assignment with the instructor's feedback on it. Winners receive a plaque and medallion, and the university covers travel and hotel for commencement weekend within its guidelines.
APU directs students to private scholarships. The APU scholarships page links to a Scholarship Universe portal, opened with an ecampus login, that lists merit, need-based, program-specific and emergency awards.
A Journal Open to Students
Among the journals APUS publishes or sponsors, the Saber and Scroll Historical Journal takes work from graduate and undergraduate students. It is peer-reviewed. Submissions can cover history or military history, and the journal also prints book reviews and reviews of exhibits and museums. Independent scholars and alumni may submit as well.
Tutoring and Paper Review
APU students get 10 free hours of online tutoring through Tutor.com for their whole time at the university, and more hours can be requested from Student Services. Writing tutors work live or through drop-off essay review. The library's answer on where to have a paper proofread or reviewed says tutors cover grammar, organization, quoting and paraphrasing, and citations, and try to return feedback within 24 hours.
Library Help for Capstones and Theses
The APUS Richard G. Trefry Library runs Writing@APUS, its writing center site, and a Citation Hub with style guides for APA, Bluebook, Chicago/Turabian and MLA. Its writing and citing guide links to the APA Style Guide (7th), help finding sample research papers and theses, and advice on checking a paper for plagiarism before turning it in.
Graduate students can turn to the Graduate Writing section of Writing @ Trefry. It has pages on the capstone thesis, research questions, research proposals, literature reviews and getting published, plus a pointer to the AMU/APU Thesis or Capstone Manual.
Our editors give capstones, theses, dissertations and course papers a last check for grammar, consistency and format before they go in. See our American Public University thesis and dissertation editing and American Public University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
