Grants and Writing Resources for The American University in Cairo
The youngest presenters at the 2026 IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Granada, Spain, were two AUC computer engineering seniors. Their senior thesis, built by a team of six AUC students, describes a compact language model that reads a chart's structure before reasoning about it, and on chart question answering it outperformed much larger systems. The paper is set to appear in the IEEE Xplore digital library.
Money for Undergraduate Research
AUC's Undergraduate Research Program pays part of the cost of undergraduate research and creative work. Its Undergraduate Support Grants include a travel grant for presenting at conferences, exhibitions or events: up to $1,800 for one student, $3,600 for a team in one discipline and $4,000 for a mixed-discipline team, or the EGP equivalent. A research internship grant of up to $4,000 funds a summer placement abroad with a host institute or professor. Teams heading to academic competitions in fields from science to writing can get up to $4,000, and community-based research projects run with a local partner can receive up to EGP 35,000.
Applicants must be full-time undergraduates with at least 60 credit hours, a GPA of 2.9 or higher (3.2 for internships) and a faculty advisor's letter. Going to a conference without presenting doesn't qualify.
EURECA
Undergraduates from first year to capstone present at EURECA, AUC's annual conference for undergraduate work within its Research and Creativity Convention; the name stands for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, Entrepreneurship and Creative Achievement. Creative writing, film, podcasts and game design go to its Creatopia strand. Startups have their own expo.
Journals and the Knowledge Fountain
URJe, the Undergraduate Research Journal, is a refereed annual run by the Undergraduate Research Program and the main library. It takes research articles, essays, case studies, creative writing and audio-visual work. A faculty editorial board reviews submissions, and accepted authors revise with an editor from the Writing Center.
Theses and dissertations are held in the AUC Knowledge Fountain, the repository run by AUC Libraries and Learning Technologies, alongside student audiovisual projects and other work deposited by students and faculty.
Writing Support
The Mohamed Taymour Writing and Communication Center offers free one-on-one tutoring to undergraduate and graduate students in every discipline, at any stage from brainstorming to citations. Graduate students can bring master's thesis proposals, and anyone can ask for feedback on a presentation. Tutors work in Al-Waleed Hall and on the library's first floor, and walk-ins are welcome.
Each semester the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies also runs free academic workshops for degree-seeking graduate students, covering thesis work from the literature review through writing, plus research ethics and survey design.
Graduate Grants and Fellowships
Graduate students can apply to the Dean of Graduate Studies for support grants. A conference grant covers presenting a paper on research done at AUC, and recent graduates can use it to present thesis results. A research grant pays thesis costs such as supplies, data, publication charges and research travel. Master's students can hold one research grant per study period. PhD students may receive up to three grants, two of them conference grants.
Among AUC's graduate fellowships are Writing Center Graduate Fellowships for applicants to humanities, social sciences and public policy programs, and the Vanessa B. Korany Thesis Support Fellowship for thesis-stage students in specified political science, educational leadership and comparative education programs.
