Grants and Writing Resources for Angelo State University

Two students in Angelo State's Master of Athletic Training program spent summer 2026 as NFL interns. One worked Jacksonville Jaguars training camp and a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. The other split time between the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility in Frisco and training camp in Oxnard, California. Both are in their second year of the program, due to finish in May 2027.

Grants for Mentored Research

Undergraduates who lead a project under a full-time faculty member can apply for Undergraduate Faculty-Mentored Grants. A year-long grant pays the student $1,500, half in fall and half in spring. A single-semester grant covers up to $750 in itemized research expenses. Up to three students can share a project, each with an individual award. Recipients enroll in at least three hours of directed independent study each funded term and present a poster at the spring undergraduate research symposium.

Graduate students in good standing apply for the year-long Graduate Research Fellowship: $1,000 to the student, paid $500 a semester, plus up to $1,000 more for itemized research expenses. Fellows take part in the Graduate Research Symposium in the spring. For a conference talk or poster, research travel funding covers up to $500 for one in-state or out-of-state trip a year.

Symposiums, Readings and Oasis

The Student Research Symposium is open to any ASU student working with a faculty mentor, undergraduate or graduate. At the May 2026 Graduate Research Symposium and Awards Ceremony, ASU named 15 Outstanding Graduate Students nominated by their departments, and three of them also received superlative excellence awards.

Writers have two outlets in the Natalie Zan Ryan Department of English and Modern Languages. Oasis, the annual art and literary magazine, is edited by ASU students and takes poetry, one-act plays, short fiction, creative nonfiction, essays, art and photography. The 29th ASU Writers Conference in Honor of Elmer Kelton, in March 2026, featured a reading and presentation by Colson Whitehead, a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Honors students who take Highest University Honors finish with HONR 4399, a faculty-directed Honors Thesis or Creative Project in the final semester. The New Family Honors Enhancement Fund pays for Alvin New Family Summer Travel Grants, awarded case by case for conferences, research at universities and labs, internships and workshops, creative-writing workshops among them.

Graduate Scholarships and Assistantships

ASU awards about 150 new ASU Distinguished Graduate Scholarships a year. They are based on the GPA of a student's highest degree at admission, with no separate application, and pay up to $2,500 a year for a GPA of 3.76 to 4.0. Recipients also pay in-state tuition. A master's student can hold the award for up to three years, and Ed.D. and Psy.D. students for up to six.

The College of Graduate Studies and Research lists graduate, teaching and research assistantships, and students apply to the department where they want to work. Graduate and research assistants generally work up to 17.5 hours a week. Teaching assistantships carry a stipend and require 18 graduate hours in the field.

The Writing Center and the Thesis

Peer tutors at the Writing Center, Room 328 of Porter Henderson Library, take walk-ins first come, first served and work with students in any discipline. A Word draft sent through the electronic form gets comments within 48 hours. Graduate writers book the Graduate Writing Consultant instead: one-hour sessions for thesis and dissertation work, booked 48 hours ahead with the draft attached. The consultant works through the writing in conversation, and proofreading stays with the student.

The Thesis Manual, revised fall 2025, asks students to use a recent issue of a respected scholarly journal in the major field as their model. The committee chair reviews content and format first, and the College of Graduate Studies and Research then checks the manuscript. Formatting aids and accessibility guides for theses, dissertations and doctoral capstones are on the college's resources page. The final thesis is submitted electronically to the Texas Digital Library, and the full text appears in the Angelo State University Digital Repository.

If a thesis is headed to the College of Graduate Studies and Research, or a paper to a journal, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
