Grants and Writing Resources for Auckland University of Technology

In July 2026 AUT reported that two of its law students, with two semesters of study behind them, had won the Hague Inter-University Law Debate, the first New Zealand team to take the top prize. They beat the reigning champions from Università di Bologna by one point in the semifinal and won the final in person in The Hague. A year earlier, two AUT Māori law students took the top individual prizes for mooting and negotiation at the inaugural Hui-ā-Tauira, which the university hosted.

Presenting Research

AUT's Three Minute Thesis competition has drawn master's and doctoral students, and since 2020 finalists have presented by video. The 2025 finals were livestreamed. The 2025 prizes included up to $1,000 in research awards and two laptops. Past AUT winners have gone on to the Asia-Pacific final and the New Zealand inter-university master's final.

The Graduate Research School runs the annual Postgraduate Research Symposium. Students give talks or stand with a poster, attendees vote for Best Poster Presentation, and a Best Abstract award goes to one of three nominees chosen from the submitted abstracts.

Doctoral Scholarships

For 2026 awards, the AUT Doctoral Scholarship and the Vice-Chancellor's Doctoral Scholarship each pay a full-time stipend of $34,737 a year for up to three years, plus tuition fees and the student services fee. The AUT Doctoral Scholarship is open to international applicants. The Vice-Chancellor's award asks for a GPA of 8.0, or 7.5 for Māori and domestic Pacific applicants. Faculties fund further awards that cover fees or fees with a stipend.

The AUT Te Aronui Postgraduate Research Scholarship goes to five Māori students a year in research master's and doctoral programmes, with domestic fees and the same $34,737 stipend.

Where Graduate Work Is Published

Rangahau Aranga: AUT Graduate Review is an open access, peer-reviewed journal run by and for postgraduate students. It launched in 2022 with the Graduate Research School and the library. The 2026 issue carries themed articles alongside abstracts from the 2025 Postgraduate Research Symposium.

To graduate, doctoral and master's students deposit a digital copy of the thesis, dissertation or exegesis in Tuwhera Open Theses and Dissertations, which has held AUT postgraduate research since 2002.

Writing Support

The AUT Library books 20-minute appointments with learning advisors and runs workshops on academic writing, paraphrasing and referencing. Coursework students can send drafts to Studiosity through Canvas for feedback before they submit.

Research students have a separate program. The Graduate Research School's postgraduate workshops include academic writing and thesis formatting. In 2026 it scheduled two writers' retreats at Vaughan Park in Long Bay, each two and a half days of writing time with academics and writing experts on site, with places allocated by application.
