Grants and Writing Resources for The Australian National University
Psychiatric epidemiology at Oxford is the next step for an ANU graduate elected one of nine 2026 Rhodes Scholars from Australia, as the Australia-at-Large Scholar. As a student the scholar did research at ANU's National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health and now plans a career in youth mental health research and advice.
Thesis Boot Camps
ANU Researcher Development runs three-day boot camps for higher degree researchers, each with a common goal such as a word count or a particular type of document. The in-person Thesis Boot Camp sets a 20,000-word target and is open to HDR candidates who are at least two and a half years in, with meals provided. The online TPR Boot Camp, recommended for first-year candidates, helps you complete the Thesis Proposal Review and plan its oral presentation. Others cover statistics and data analysis plans, journal articles, and turning research into a book proposal. Places can be limited, and applications are assessed on research progress, goals for the camp and personal circumstances.
Earlier-stage writers can go to ANU Academic Skills, whose appointments give students individualised one-to-one feedback on their work. Its research writing guides take Honours and thesis students from proposal through literature review and chapters to editing and journal articles.
Student Journals
Several peer-reviewed student journals sit on the ANU Student Journals platform. Field Studies in Ecology publishes papers from undergraduate field courses, and The Human Voyage takes undergraduate research in biological anthropology, from primatology to bioarchaeology. Residential halls run their own: Cross-Sections at Bruce Hall, Merici at Ursula Hall and The Burgmann Journal at Burgmann College.
Travel for Research
HDR students who have finished a year of full-time study and are on track with their milestones can apply for a Vice-Chancellor's HDR Travel Grant of up to $5,000. It pays for a visiting scholar placement overseas, presenting a paper or poster at an international conference, or reaching collections and facilities abroad that the project needs. Each student can receive it once.
Where Theses Are Published
Every HDR thesis, and every Honours thesis that earns First Class, goes into the library's Open Research repository. A thesis submitted through ISIS is deposited automatically once the degree is awarded, and access can be restricted for up to 12 months. The library has digitised its full collection of PhD and research theses, more than 13,000 of them, and in one year ANU theses were downloaded over 935,000 times.
If you'd like an editor's eye on a thesis chapter or a research paper before it goes out, we can help. See our Australian National University dissertation and thesis editing and Australian National University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
