Grants and Writing Resources for Bellarmine University

A third-year English and creative writing major at Bellarmine won the third annual Annette Allen Poetry Prize in 2025, a contest open to college students in the Louisville metro area. First place brought $300 and publication in The Louisville Review. The Class of 2025 also posted strong numbers: a Career Development Center survey released in March 2026 found 99% of those graduates working or continuing their education within six months, and 88% of the undergraduates had logged at least 90 hours in internships, clinical placements, research or student teaching.

The Spring Poster Session

Bellarmine has held a student poster session every spring since 2001 as part of Academic Achievement week. Graduate students have presented alongside undergraduates since 2014, and a faculty mentor approves each submission before it is accepted. An Arts and Humanities Celebration joined the program in 2017.

Independent research and faculty collaborations both qualify. So do community-based program work and creative projects.

Research Money and Honors Theses

Two student research funds pay for projects. The Student Government Association created the Undergraduate Student Research Fund, and the Provost's Office set up the Graduate Student Research Fund. Each fund has a proposal template and guidelines, and recipients file a final report when the work is done.

The Honors Program offers a thesis track built on two courses, HONR 450 and HONR 451, with written expectations for the thesis advisor and thesis reader and nomination forms for best thesis and best thesis presentation. Honors students in good standing can ask for a Joe and Angela Schmidt Honors Research Award to cover supplies, conference registration or research travel. Their faculty advisor signs off first, and a committee of the program director and two Honors Council members reviews applications as they come in.

Where Student Work Appears

ScholarWorks@Bellarmine, the repository run by the W.L. Lyons Brown Library, keeps an Undergraduate Theses collection that spans chemistry, psychology, literature, theatre, finance and machine learning. Its Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones collection holds education and athletic training studies, and its nursing entries include evidence syntheses and quality improvement projects.

Poets and fiction writers can work on Ariel, the student-run literary magazine.

Doctoral Study and the Writing Center

The PhD in Leadership in Higher Education and the PhD in Education and Social Change each run 60 credit hours, with three years of coursework before the dissertation in the fourth year. New students in those programs and in several master's programs can apply for graduate assistantships that pay $15 an hour plus three hours of tuition remission each fall and spring, with wages capped at $10,000 per academic year.

The Writing Center works with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff, in person or online, at any stage of a draft. Its coaches take up grammar, syntax and style with the goal of teaching writers to revise and edit their drafts. The center also runs workshops, writing groups and writing retreats.

Our editors check grammar, consistency and format in Bellarmine papers, honors theses and dissertations once the drafting is done. See our Bellarmine University dissertation and thesis editing and Bellarmine University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
