Grants and Writing Resources for Biola University

At the Gloo AI Hackathon in Boulder in October 2025, two Biola teams won two awards and $15,000 in prizes in a field of 98 teams, most of them made up of senior engineers. Four computer science majors took the Hacker's Choice Award for a system that turns a pastor's spoken words into live 3D American Sign Language. A second team, with three freshmen among its five members, won first place in the Vibe Coding category with an app for guided reflection on phone use. In August 2026 the university reported that four engineering majors in the senior capstone course had designed and built a heavy-duty drone for Campus Safety, with swappable payloads and parts made in campus labs.

Undergraduate Research and Honors

The Stewart Science Honors Program admits 20 incoming students each fall and carries a $6,000 academic award spread over four years. Students design a research project with a faculty member. The catalog requires a summer research experience of at least 200 hours on campus after the first year, and a senior capstone that ends in a written final report and a public oral presentation.

Three students from an eight-week Stewart internship presented posters on the Stable Marriage Problem at the 2024 International Forum on Research Excellence in Washington, D.C., and two of them took first place in the undergraduate math and computer science category. For seniors at the top of the class, Epsilon Kappa Epsilon invites the top 5% of graduating undergraduates with a GPA of at least 3.75; it inducted 42 in spring 2026.

Dissertation Prizes at Rosemead

Doctoral students in clinical psychology at the Rosemead School of Psychology work in faculty research labs, and the mentor chairs the M.A. project or dissertation committee. Labs study culture and mental health, meaning-making in suffering, relational spirituality, social media addiction and women's issues. The same page lists two dissertation awards. The William F. Hunter Dissertation Prize supports research that integrates psychology and the Christian faith. The Mental Health and the Church Scholarship backs dissertations on topics such as clergy well-being and stigma reduction.

Ph.D. students complete an M.A. research project and then a dissertation of original research, while Psy.D. students choose among empirical research, program evaluation and theoretical synthesis. On the Rosemead aid page, departmental need-based awards range from $500 to $10,000 a year. Rosemead also publishes the Journal of Psychology and Theology, which has run since 1973.

Talbot Doctoral Students

In Talbot's Ph.D. in Educational Studies, the dissertation formally begins when the candidate defends a proposal written in TTDS 8900. Each candidate gets a chair from the graduate faculty, empirical work needs IRB approval before any data is collected, and the degree ends with an oral defense before the doctoral committee. The catalog sets seven years for finishing the degree.

The Talbot scholarship list includes the Lingenfelter Doctoral Fellowship, up to $5,000 for Ph.D. students in intercultural studies who have at least eight years of cross-cultural mission experience, renewable for a second and third year. The Frank and Madeline Visca Christians in Leadership Endowed Scholarship goes to students in a Talbot Ph.D. program, and the Bill Bynum Memorial Scholarship to students in the Ed.D.

Writing Center and Library Help

The Rhetoric & Writing Center is on the middle level of the library and works with writers face to face and online. Its peer consultants read assignments, research reports, graduate theses and conference presentations. The current roster lists 21 undergraduates and four graduate consultants from Talbot philosophy, marriage and family therapy, and the Master of Divinity. Its resource page links Turabian tip sheets, APA Academic Writer and a Brief APA Handbook.

Librarians take research consultations by appointment. Student fiction, poetry and black-and-white photography appear in The Inkslinger, the creative arts journal published each semester and open to students in any major.

A capstone report, a Rosemead dissertation or a Talbot proposal can come to us for a final edit covering grammar, consistency and APA or Turabian format. See our Biola University dissertation and thesis editing and Biola University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
