Grants and Writing Resources for California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

On March 7, 2026, more than 200 student projects went on view at Cal Poly Pomona's 14th annual Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Conference, and nine oral presentations were named exemplary and nominated to represent CPP statewide. One of those presenters went on to win. A graduate student took first place in Health, Nutrition and Clinical Sciences at the 40th CSU Student Research Competition in April 2026, for research on making natural food colorings more stable.

Where Students Present

The Student RSCA Conference is open to undergraduate and graduate students in every discipline, and participants can be selected for the CSU-wide competition. The Office of Undergraduate Research lists its other annual events too. They include the Creative Activities and Research Symposium (CARS), held in summer for CPP students and community college students in summer research programs, and the Southern California Conference on Undergraduate Research, held each November at a college or university in the greater Los Angeles area.

Funding and Recognition

Undergraduates whose work is accepted at an outside conference can apply for the Conference Presentation Award, which covers registration at $300 for regional or student conferences, $600 for national ones, and $800 for international ones. Presentations at the CPP RSCA Conference, CARS, SCCUR, and the CSU competition don't qualify. The Research Distinction adds a digital badge and a burgundy and gold cord for students who complete faculty-mentored research, present it at a conference, and publish or submit a paper. CPP students who meet all three requirements can apply.

Publishing Undergraduate Research

Reach is an online journal of undergraduate research and creative work, published by the Office of Undergraduate Research with Bronco Scholar at the University Library. Students submit a full, faculty-approved paper, and it has put out seven fall issues from 2017 through 2023.

Master's students file their approved thesis or project abstract with Bronco ScholarWorks as the last of Graduate Studies' steps toward completion. Before that, theses go through a formatting review requested by email, as the contacts page explains.

Writing Tutoring and Workshops

The Writing Center in the Learning Resource Center helps with essays, research papers, scholarship essays, résumés, and CVs. Students can meet a tutor in the University Library or on Zoom, or send a draft through Canvas for written feedback. A drop-in Writing Lounge needs no appointment.

Graduate students have a recorded series on Graduate Studies' Workshops and Tutorials page. The Graduate Resource Center's writing videos cover literature reviews, methodology sections, abstracts, and turning a seminar paper into a journal article, and the Library adds a tutorial on thesis formatting.
