Grants and Writing Resources for California Baptist University
On April 16, 2026, the university reported that CBU students had won the 2026 President's Award for Excellence in Writing.
Where Student Writing Appears
The Dazed Starling, listed among the Department of Modern Languages and Literature's student opportunities, comes out every spring and collects fiction, nonfiction and poetry from the CBU student body. Submissions are open to students in any major and any genre. The journal's stated aim is to let students work with a literary journal in a professional way while they are still in school.
Reporters, designers and broadcasters work through Lancer Media Group. It runs the Angelos yearbook, The Banner and The Banner Online, CBU TV, Pursuit magazine and Lancer PR, along with a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Students write, edit, design, shoot and produce the content, and faculty and staff advise every publication. In speech and debate, journalism and public relations, Communication Arts students have earned national and regional recognition, according to the College of Arts and Sciences.
The University Writing Center
The University Writing Center works by appointment, on campus at Lancer Arms 54 or online, and asks students to use Grammarly to clean up writing errors. Its coaches are current CBU students, undergraduate and graduate; several list graduate writing, APA and Chicago/Turabian among their specialties. The center leaves grammar corrections to the writer. Coaches supply resources and help students find the parts of a draft that need work.
Each spring the center hosts one of its Distinguished Lectures, a public talk by a Christian professional that comes with an award and shows clear, persuasive writing at work. One of the two lectures listed for 2025, given by the university's president, drew 665 guests to Van Dyne Gymnasium.
Graduate Funding and Theses
CBU alumni who return for a graduate degree can receive the Lancer Loyalty Graduate School Grant, listed with the university's graduate scholarships and aid. It ranges from $500 to $3,000 and is awarded on academic merit, financial need and the program chosen. The Department of Modern Languages and Literature's Omega Phi pages list Sigma Delta Pi research grants, which active graduate members of the Spanish honor society can use for Hispanic Studies research travel to Spain or Spanish America.
The university offers eleven doctoral programs, among them the PhD in Leadership Studies, the DNP and the PsyD in Clinical Psychology. Graduate theses, dissertations and cumulative projects are collected in SHARE, the open access repository for research by the CBU community. The CBU library links to ProQuest's dissertation database and to the same repository.
CBU's writing coaches leave grammar corrections to the writer, and a final edit for grammar, consistency and format is the work our editors do.
