Grants and Writing Resources for California State University, Bakersfield
CSUB's Student Research Competition put more than 60 student projects before judges on March 6, 2026, in seven divisions running from Biological & Agricultural Sciences to Health, Nutrition, & Clinical Services. In Humanities & Letters, a graduate student and an undergraduate each took first place at their level. Graduate students can also enter the CSUB Grad Slam, first held in 2019.
Presenting Research
The Student Research Competition is run by GRASP, CSUB's Office of Grants, Research, and Sponsored Programs, and it's open to undergraduate and graduate scholarship and creative work. Judges name outstanding presenters by division. Graduate students can also enter the CSUB Grad Slam, also called 3MT and backed by the university's Title Vb grant, whose page lists past winners back to the first Grad Slam in 2019.
Research Funding
The Student Research Scholars Program gives $2,000 to student-faculty teams to carry out and finish a project in research, scholarship, or creative activity. The CSUB Foundation funds it. For students whose work has been accepted through peer review at a national or regional meeting, Travel Support for Student Research helps with the cost of going to present, and both undergraduates and graduate students can apply.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
The Graduate Student Center keeps a funding list for master's and doctoral students. Its Graduate Equity Fellowship pays $500 to $2,000 per academic year to full-time master's students with financial need who are California residents or have an AB540 affidavit on file, and the Kegley Institute of Ethics Student Fellowship pays a $1,500 stipend for an ethics project on campus or in the community. The same page covers CSU systemwide programs for students headed toward doctorates. One is the California Pre-Doctoral Program, open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
Publishing
Two annual journals with student editorial teams are described on the English Department's publications page. Calliope, produced by the department, prints literary criticism, scholarship, and book reviews by CSUB students, and students can join its staff through English 4750. Orpheus, founded in 1973, takes poetry, fiction, scripts, comics, and art from students in any major.
Master's theses, projects, and dissertations are self-submitted through ProQuest's ETD tool. The library's ETD guide explains that the finished work then appears in ProQuest, the Walter W. Stiern Library catalog, and ScholarWorks, CSUB's institutional repository.
Help With Writing
The Writing Resource Center offers free tutoring to currently enrolled CSUB students, in any subject and at any stage from brainstorming to editing. Sessions run in person and on Zoom. Tutors also help with APA, MLA, ASA, and Chicago citation.
