Grants and Writing Resources for Claremont Graduate University

Best Poster at the 2026 7 C's Psychology Conference went to a fourth-year CGU PhD student in positive developmental psychology. The meeting started as a smaller CGU-focused symposium and is now a daylong event for students from five Claremont campuses, with about 40 presenters, up from 15 presentations the year before.

Writing Support

CGU's Center for Writing & Rhetoric has taught graduate-level writing and presentation since 1985. Its consultants meet students one on one at any stage of a project, in person, online or by email.

Dissertation writers get more structured time through the center's writing events. Weekend Dissertation Bootcamps run online for two days, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with goal-setting each morning and a working lunch spent talking about the dissertation process; ABD students are reviewed first, then those working on proposals or master's theses. A week-long Summer Dissertation Bootcamp asks for an application and an advisor-approved writing plan. Productivity Saturdays, open to students at any stage, replaced the old one-day retreats.

Students who want a weekly structure can take WRIT 350: Dissertation & Thesis Writing, a semester course with one hour of instruction and two hours of writing per class. At zero units it carries no tuition and is pass/fail.

Fellowships for Doctoral Research

CGU's named fellowships go out according to donor criteria, and a student's program coordinator or the director of financial aid does the matching, as the fellowship FAQ explains. Two of the endowed fellowships support dissertations directly. The Susan M. Daniels Scholarship funds dissertation research by a doctoral student working on disability, and the Dr. Helen R. Powell Dissertation Fellowship goes to a School of Educational Studies PhD student whose research addresses creative elementary school curriculum or teaching. Among the annual fellowships, the Faster Forward Fellowship is for Evaluation doctoral students whose work advances evaluation theory or practice.

Travel Money and Grant Help

The Student Senate's Travel and Material Awards help graduate students pay to attend conferences and present research, and reimburse supplies needed for academic projects. Awards run each term. For outside funding, the Center for Writing & Rhetoric's Student Grant & Award Initiative helps any CGU student search for grants and write applications, Fulbright included.
