Grants and Writing Resources for Dallas Baptist University
DBU's Patriot Debate Team, launched in 2021, came home from the 2024–2025 season with 129 awards from 10 tournaments. At the IPDA national tournament one student won the Professional division and another the Junior Varsity division, and the program placed second in the season-long Professional sweepstakes.
DOXA: The Literary Festival and the Magazine
DOXA is sponsored by the English Department, the University Honors Program and the Art Department. Its Literary Festival is an annual competition for DBU students in categories including poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction, with winners announced in each category. The English Department's Literary Circle meets bimonthly during the school year, where writers share their work and receive feedback.
DOXA Magazine, started in 2018, is the student-led publication that follows. It's produced through Alpha Eta Xi, DBU's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, and prints festival writing alongside song lyrics, musical compositions, and art and photographs from the College of Fine Arts show. A student managing editor runs a team of student editors who review submissions and work with authors. Student graphic designers handle layout before it goes to print.
Presenting Research
The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Beta Beta Beta Biological Society hold the annual Herb Robbins Research Symposium, where DBU students and alumni present work in biology, environmental studies, computer science and healthcare research. The 2025 edition ran over two days in the Hillcrest Great Hall of the Mahler Student Center.
Honors students do their research in the major. The Advanced Honors track requires an Honors Thesis or senior project, usually written in the senior year under a professor in the student's field: HNRS 4180 covers the initial research and HNRS 4280 the completion and defense. According to the Honors Program, students present the finished project to a panel before graduation.
Help With Writing
The University Writing Center is open to every undergraduate and graduate student at no extra charge, since student fees pay for it. Trained consultants meet students in person in Room 001 in the basement of the Collins Learning Center or online through Collaborate. Its writing workshops are guides on essay structure, grammar and papers, including one on writing a quality research paper and one on writing religion papers.
For citation questions the library's Ask a Librarian service points students to the Writing Center's handouts and a library guide on citing and plagiarism. Librarians answer by text, email or phone.
Doctoral Research
The Ph.D. in Leadership Studies in the Cook School of Leadership builds toward the dissertation through two research courses, statistics and a qualitative methods course matched to the student's concentration. The dissertation itself carries six credit hours, split between a prospectus course (PHDL 8310) and the dissertation course (PHDL 8320). Students also attend three summer institutes, intensive sessions of 7 to 10 days held in Dallas, Washington, D.C., and Oxford. DBU keeps a list of doctoral dissertations completed by its Ed.D. and Ph.D. students from 2008 to 2024, with each one's topic and research method.
For a final edit before submission, our PhD-level editors work with DBU students at every level. See our Dallas Baptist University dissertation and thesis editing and Dallas Baptist University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
