Grants and Writing Resources for Delta State University

A Delta State undergraduate took a poster titled "Analysis of Microplastics in Teeth" to the American Chemical Society's Spring 2026 meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center, and it was named one of the top 20 analytical posters in the Sci-Mix session. More than 10,000 chemists, researchers and industry professionals attended. The same study later won first place among undergraduates at the university's 2026 Academic Research Showcase.

Posters and Prizes at the Library

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Roberts-LaForge Library host the Academic Research Showcase every year. It is a poster session where undergraduate and graduate students present original research and talk it over with the campus community. The Director of Library Services organized the 2026 showcase, held in the Student Success Center on the library's first floor. Fourteen students were honored, with first and second place awarded in an undergraduate category and a graduate category.

A year earlier, the 2025 showcase honored 20 students whose work covered humanities, fine arts, music, chemistry, biology and counselor education. First place in the graduate category went to a project on the election of 1912 by a history student in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. An undergraduate study of exoticism in Verdi's Aida received a Special Recognition Award.

Honors Projects

The Honors Program has 25 spots each year. HON 499, the Honors Forum, supports a capstone or final project in the last year of a degree and culminates in at least one public presentation. In HON 299 and HON 399, students report on enhanced work and formalize a course contract with a faculty member of their choice. Honors Fellows may apply for a scholarship of $500 per semester.

Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships

Delta State funds about 70 graduate assistantships a year in university departments and units. A GA works 15 to 27.5 hours a week, depending on the position, in exchange for a tuition stipend. Assistants must be full-time students. Students in online programs may hold a GA-ship, though the work is done on the Cleveland campus.

Graduate and Continuing Studies lists named awards on its funding opportunities page. The B.F. Smith Scholars program is for entering graduate students in community and economic development who show commitment to the Mississippi Delta. Its scholarships pay up to $500 per semester, and the B.F. Smith Scholars Fellowship pays $3,000 plus tuition per semester to a limited number of students. Teach For America alumni who have completed their two-year commitment can apply as TFA Graduate Fellows, pairing a Delta State degree with a social innovation program for the Delta community.

Writing Help and ProQuest Submission

The Writing Center is in Kethley Hall, Room 201, with a second location called the Writing Center Outpost that keeps evening hours. It works with freshmen, graduate students, faculty and community members at every stage of a paper, from brainstorming and thesis development to sentence structure and documentation style. Online sessions run in real time on Zoom.

The library's ProQuest submission guide sets out the steps. After a successful defense, the student makes any revisions and checks the formatting, and the committee chair approves the manuscript. The student then submits it through the library's Dissertation and Thesis Submission page and pays for two hardcover library copies. Personal copies, Open Access and copyright registration are optional. According to the guide, the doctoral program coordinator reviews a dissertation and the committee chair or advisor reviews a thesis, and the library's ETD liaison then delivers the work to ProQuest.

Before a thesis goes to ProQuest or a seminar paper goes to a professor, our editors can give it a final check for grammar, consistency and format.
