Grants and Writing Resources for East Texas A&M University

Five Visual Communication students from the BFA class of 2027 were among the East Texas A&M winners at the 2026 AAF Dallas American Advertising Awards, a competition that draws thousands of professional and collegiate entrants each year. Two of them won silver awards, one for motel room amenities packaging and one for the typography in a bicycle safety campaign, and each added an honorable mention. The other three received honorable mentions.

Undergraduate Research

UROC, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Collaboration, connects students in any discipline with faculty mentors and keeps a database of faculty projects. Students show their results at Demo Day, a public demonstration on campus, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs hosts an annual research symposium.

The Student Transformative Learning Award (STLA), a partnership of the Honors College and the Office of the Provost, pays up to $1,500 for travel, materials or stipends on a mentored project such as research, a research internship or conference travel. Undergraduates need a 3.0 GPA and at least sophomore standing. The application includes a 300 to 500 word essay and a letter from the supervising faculty member.

Honors Fellowships

Incoming first-year students admitted to the Honors College can receive an Honors Undergraduate Fellowship of up to $2,000 a semester for up to eight semesters, and it stacks with other university scholarships. The college's Transformative Learning funds pay for undergraduate research and conference travel, and students without a fellowship can still apply for funding for Honors-approved undergraduate research.

Graduate Scholarships and Assistantships

Among the Graduate School's named scholarships, the H.M. Lafferty Doctoral Scholarship pays $3,000 a year for two years to doctoral students, and the Keith & Nancy McFarland Endowment pays $1,000 a year. The Nancy Ruth Lenoir Scholarship goes to graduate students completing a thesis or dissertation. In its 2024 competition, the Summer Thesis/Dissertation Fellowship paid $1,000 per award to master's, specialist and doctoral students in the last stage of a thesis or dissertation who enrolled in thesis or dissertation hours that summer.

Graduate assistantships cover teaching, teacher-of-record, research and non-teaching roles. A full-time nine-month appointment pays $10,000 to $18,000 for doctoral students and $8,000 to $16,000 for master's and specialist students. Full-time teaching and research assistants also receive remission of resident graduate tuition for up to six semester hours.

Writing Help and Thesis Review

The Writing Center has worked with students, faculty and staff since 1977. It is in Room 245 of the Velma K. Waters Library, where consultants, all current students, work one-on-one with writers on projects at any stage. They also coach students through long projects such as theses and dissertations.

Thesis and Dissertation Services (TDS) in the Graduate School does a format-only review of proposals and final documents, and students are responsible for the content, writing, citations and disciplinary style. The submission guide states that TDS staff do not serve as editors or proofreaders and expects students to proofread and edit before submitting for review. Once TDS approves the final document, the student uploads it to ProQuest.

Our editors can give a thesis or dissertation a final edit for grammar, consistency and Graduate School format before it goes to TDS. See our East Texas A&M University dissertation and thesis editing and East Texas A&M University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
