Grants and Writing Resources for Fairfield University
Fairfield's Class of 2027 picked up a pair of Goldwater Scholarships in May 2026, won by a mechanical engineering major who studies laser-based optical flow diagnostics and a physics major in the Honors Program who studies extreme precipitation. Both plan to pursue Ph.D.s. A few weeks earlier, more than 600 undergraduate and graduate students presented at the Student Research Symposium, with presenters from every academic school.
Research Funding
The Office of Student Research and National Fellowships awards donor-funded Student Research and Travel Grants twice a year to undergraduate and graduate students working with faculty mentors. Research grants cover up to $500 in materials and supplies for a project of up to 12 months. Travel grants pay up to $1,500 per project for an academic conference attended with a faculty mentor, or for significant research off campus. Students who haven't had one before get preference, and every recipient presents at the April symposium.
The same office advises on national awards. Its fellowships list runs to 18 programs, from Fulbright and Truman to Schwarzman and the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships, and juniors and seniors apply through an internal campus review before going to the sponsor.
The April Symposium
Fairfield's Student Research Symposium brought work by about 600 students to the Leo D. Mahoney Arena in 2026. The morning opens with nursing and public health capstones and graduate projects from the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies, then moves to capstone and course-based projects from several schools. The afternoon session is for faculty-mentored independent research, including Sigma Xi projects in the sciences and senior engineering design projects. A 2026 eBook collects the faculty-moderated projects.
Tutoring in the Library
The Writing Center is on the main floor of the DiMenna-Nyselius Library in NYS 218. Any undergraduate or graduate student can come in, in person or online, at any stage from brainstorming to editing, and for resumes and cover letters as well as papers. Tutors are paid peers. Undergraduate tutors are chosen from ENGL 290, Writing and Responding, a semester-long, three-credit course, and graduate tutors both take appointments and guide the undergraduate staff.
Publishing
The library's repository, DigitalCommons@Fairfield, gives open access to work by Fairfield faculty, students and staff, and its Electronic Theses, Dissertations, & Capstones collection already includes work from 2026. Undergraduates looking for a journal can send work on global awareness, social justice, environmental responsibility or humanitarianism to the Undergraduate Journal of Global Citizenship, which reached Volume 6 in 2026.
