Grants and Writing Resources for Georgetown University

A School of Health junior won a 2026 Goldwater Scholarship, one of 453 scholars chosen from 1,485 nominees. The human science major studies neurodegenerative disease. At the NIH that work means patients and their samples; in a Georgetown lab it means learning how connections between neurons can be strengthened, a question tied to memory and Alzheimer's.

Summer Research and Showcases

For summer 2027, the Center for Research & Fellowships pays CRF Summer Research Fellows $6,000 for a full-time, 10-week project. Fellows either assist a Georgetown professor with that professor's research or carry out an independent project under faculty mentorship. A literature review for a future thesis counts. Graduating seniors can't apply, and the fellowship can't be used for course credit.

For the BIG EAST Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium held at Madison Square Garden in March 2027, CRF is selecting five undergraduate projects through a campus review. Applicants must be lead authors of the poster. Individual and team prizes are given at the lunch that follows.

Journals Run by Students

The Georgetown Journal of International Affairs is the flagship academic publication of the Walsh School of Foreign Service, staffed by current undergraduates and graduate students. The first issue appeared in spring 2000. Today the journal releases one peer-reviewed volume a year and posts shorter pieces online on a rolling basis.

History writers have the Georgetown Journal of History, an independent student-run publication of undergraduate scholarship in long print articles and short multimedia posts about Georgetown and Washington. The history department's academic journals page describes it and lists other undergraduate history journals and law reviews.

Graduate Fellowships and Grants

Faculty nominate entering Ph.D. students for the Patrick Healy Graduate Fellowship, named for the first African American to earn a doctorate. It supports fellows twelve months a year for up to five years, as long as they make satisfactory progress toward the degree.

Graduate Studies also lists research and travel awards. Conference Travel Grants are open to master's and doctoral students on the Main Campus and at the Medical Center. GradGov-GradStudies Research Grants cover supplies, training, data collection and travel for a thesis, dissertation or research project. The Harold N. Glassman Distinguished Dissertation Awards recognize one dissertation in each of the humanities, social sciences and sciences. For doctoral students doing archival or field research outside the U.S., Dissertation Research Travel Grants pay up to $5,000.

Tutoring and Thesis Format

The Writing Center in Lauinger 217A is staffed by graduate and undergraduate tutors, and current students can work with either. Sessions last 30 or 60 minutes, online appointments run on Zoom, and each writer can book up to five sessions with one consultant per semester. Under the center's policy, a tutor may model how to copyedit a sentence or fix a grammar error, then prompt the writer to show they can make the next correction.

Graduate Studies posts Word and LaTeX templates and a formatting requirements document. Each dissertation or doctoral project uploaded to ProQuest goes through a formatting review by Graduate Studies, and the required edits arrive by email. There will likely be more than one round.

A draft headed for formatting review or a professor's desk can come to us first for a final edit of grammar, consistency, and format. See our Georgetown University dissertation and thesis editing and Georgetown University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
