Grants and Writing Resources for Gonzaga University

Gonzaga's 2025 Christmas video, with President Katia Passerini, featured an original poem by an English major in the class of 2027. The student came to poetry in Professor Tod Marshall's writing class and wrote the piece in an hour. By April 2026 the College of Arts and Sciences reported that the same writer had been published in several literary journals.

Research Funding

The Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry administers funds for several programs: the McKinstry Fellows Research Program, the Morris Undergraduate Research Fellowships, the GRO-MECS program in math, engineering and computer science, and the Gonzaga Science Research Program in the natural sciences. Students share results at events such as the Spokane Intercollegiate Research Conference. Those presenting at a local or national conference or exhibition can apply for an Undergraduate Travel Award, and the center prints posters for students in its research programs.

A Gonzaga story on the 2018 cohort of Morris fellows described the program as summer research in the arts, humanities and social sciences, funded by Scott and Liz Morris since the 2016-17 academic year, with a stipend for each faculty-mentored project. Fellows in those first cohorts ranged from music majors to communication studies majors.

Department Prizes

The College of Arts and Sciences names academic award winners department by department. The 2026 list includes the Psychology Student Research Award, the Fr. William T. Costello Outstanding Senior English Award, the Kohls Award for Excellence in Philosophy and the Fredric Schlatter S.J. Book Award in classical civilizations.

The English department lists Zag Writers Read, where Gonzaga's creative writers share work with the wider community. Its Visiting Writers Series brings published authors to campus.

National Fellowships

Career and Professional Development advises on competitive fellowships and scholarships, among them the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Goldwater, Truman, Marshall, Gates-Cambridge and Schwarzman. Students book a session with a career coach through ZagsIgnite. A Rhodes application requires an endorsement from Gonzaga University.

Writing Help and Dissertations

The Writing Center works from Room 121 of the Foley Center Library, with tutoring from brainstorming to final polish. Sessions usually run 30 minutes; longer projects can book 60 or 90. Students who prefer Zoom say so on the intake form. As the center's FAQ explains, tutors show writers how to find and correct errors, and students remain responsible for the work they hand in.

Foley Library keeps a complete collection of dissertations and theses written for the Ph.D., Ed.D. and nursing master's programs, listed in the Leadership Studies research guide along with the ProQuest database of Gonzaga dissertations. Leadership studies dissertations and theses are also posted in the open-access Repository of Gonzaga University.

Before a course paper, thesis, or dissertation goes to an instructor or committee, our editors can give it a final check for grammar, consistency, and format.
