Grants and Writing Resources for Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

When Gordon-Conwell hosted a regional meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society in March 2025, two of its MATS students read papers alongside faculty and alumni. One presented a biblical theology of human disability, and the other spoke on devotional literacy in the Beaufort/Beauchamp Hours. Ph.D. students publish as a degree requirement. The Ph.D. program expects each of them to submit an article to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of the first year of the dissertation phase.

Help With Writing

The Gordon-Conwell Writing Center, hosted on the library's website, is open to Gordon-Conwell students who enroll through its online course site. It has free writing guides and recorded writing workshops. There's also a for-credit course, the Writing Skills Workshop (CT490), on grammar and composition. Professional revision and editing services are offered too, through the seminary's store.

Citation style depends on the course. The center's Formatting Correctly guide calls for Turabian, usually notes-bibliography, in theological courses and APA in counseling courses. When the expectations aren't clear, it tells you to ask your instructor.

Student Journals

The Africanus Journal comes from the Africanus Guild at the Center for Urban Ministerial Education, Gordon-Conwell's Boston campus. It's a multilingual academic journal with a multiethnic, urban focus, and it publishes students alongside faculty, alumni, and friends of the Guild. Its archive goes back to 2009, and the current issue is Vol. 18, No. 1 (April 2026).

Ph.D. students publish as a degree requirement. The Ph.D. program expects each student to submit an article to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of the first year of the dissertation phase.

Fellowships and Doctoral Funding

Domestic Ph.D. applicants can apply for full-tuition fellowships through the Partnership Program when they apply to the Ph.D. program. A limited number of full fellowships with housing go to international students with financial need. Doctoral candidates spend two years in residence in Hamilton for seminars and research colloquia, then usually finish the dissertation in their home context.

The seminary's scholarships page lists fellowships with ongoing responsibilities. The Parish Pulpit Preaching Fellowship pays $29,000 for a single recipient and $33,000 for a married one. DMin students can apply for the DMin Team Ministry Grant (50%) or the need-based DMin scholarship (25%).

Where Theses Are Published

The library's DMin Resources page points to the online homes of Gordon-Conwell DMin theses. The library lists three: a GCTS DMin Theses collection on the Internet Archive, Atla's Research in Ministry database, which holds abstracts and full text, and TREN, an independent vendor the library calls the legacy repository for GCTS DMin theses.

The ThM lets students choose a six-credit thesis or a concentration plus a capstone course. A thesis also meets the degree's research and writing requirement.
