Grants and Writing Resources for Grambling State University

Grambling State students repeated as national champions at the 2026 AUC–Mastercard Data Challenge, a data science contest run by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative. More than 100 teams from 25 colleges and universities entered. Grambling placed five teams in the Atlanta finals that spring, more than any other school, and won the $15,000 first prize and two third-place awards of $5,800 each.

Research Programs in the Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences runs the Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation (LS-LAMP). Its aim is to raise the number of minority students who earn bachelor's degrees in science, mathematics, engineering and technology, and to move graduates toward Ph.D. programs. The program's research and conference page points students to the Research Apprentice Mentorship Program and lists meetings such as the Louisiana Academy of Sciences and the Phillip L. Young Research Symposium.

A National Institutes of Health GROW contract began in September 2026 and runs through August 2028. It gives high school and undergraduate students research experience and faculty mentoring in the biological, biomedical, computational and quantitative sciences. Chemistry students also take part in research projects off campus, at companies, universities, national laboratories and NASA centers.

Scholarships and Assistantships

In fall 2026 Turner Construction awarded $70,000 in scholarships to seven business and engineering technology students, $10,000 apiece. Members of the E.L. Cole Honors College are encouraged to take thesis seminars or independent study, and the college's staff help students go after scholarships, internships and admission to graduate or professional school.

Full-time graduate students can apply for graduate assistantships. A limited number open each semester. Applicants need a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, regular admission and at least nine graduate credit hours, and they send three recommendations with the application.

Tutoring and Scribal

The Department of English arranges tutoring in English based on need. Its Scribal Writing Club publishes Scribal, a creative writing journal of student and faculty work, once a year. For research questions, the library offers one-on-one consultations by email and tutorials for its databases.

In March 2026 columnist Charles Blow, a Grambling graduate, led "The Writer's Voice," the first in a planned series of masterclasses at the university. His subject was the columnist's job and the different voices a column can use.

Theses and Dissertations

The Office of Graduate Studies lists the master's programs and two doctorates: a Ph.D. in Criminology and Justice Administration and an online Ed.D. in Developmental Education. Its Writing Guide, updated in September 2025, covers research proposals, master's projects, theses and dissertations, and its rules take precedence over a program's style manual. Its table of style manuals assigns APA 7th edition to most programs. Margins are 1.5 inches on the left, 1 inch on the right and 1.25 inches at top and bottom. A dissertation abstract must stay within 350 words, the ProQuest limit, and an IRB approval letter or exemption goes in an appendix to the proposal.

The guide lets students use AI tools for gathering information, generating ideas or checking grammar. Any AI source must be cited in APA format, and all submitted work falls under the plagiarism policy. Doctoral students in Developmental Education have a dissertation roadmap that runs from the prospectus through IRB approval and data collection to chapters 4 and 5 and the final defense. The graduate resources page links to ProQuest for publishing dissertations.

When the committee has signed off and the manuscript still has to meet the Writing Guide's margins and abstract limit, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
