Grants and Writing Resources for Hamline University
Twenty-six Hamline undergraduates finished ten weeks of summer research in August 2026, each putting at least 20 hours a week into a project with a faculty mentor. Their fields ran from neuroscience and public health to creative writing and performance, and the topics included water treatment technologies and PFAS exposure.
Paid Summer Research and Conference Travel
Summer Collaborative Undergraduate Research (SCUR) pays a $3,000 stipend for ten weeks of work on an original project defined with a Hamline faculty member, at about 20 hours a week. Students in any major can apply. Free campus housing is optional, the summer earns four free credits toward graduation, and fellows meet weekly with the program directors and the rest of the funded group.
A Hamline selection committee reviews abstracts for the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Students it selects get grants for travel, lodging and registration. Course papers, independent studies, honors theses and creative projects all qualify, and the university says it ranks in the top five of more than 300 schools by the number of students it sponsors.
Posters and Honors Projects
The spring 2026 Showcase of Student Research and Creative Inquiry in the Classroom filled the Klas Center with 83 posters. Its fall counterpart, the Interdisciplinary Student Research and Creative Inquiry Symposium, takes posters from any field, including research done off campus.
Majors with a larger project in mind can work toward departmental honors. A Departmental Honors Project usually starts in the spring of junior year and ends in the spring of senior year. Finished projects are kept in the Departmental Honors Projects collection of DigitalCommons@Hamline.
Prizes and Student Journals
The Eugene W. Randall Prize dates to 1938 and now honors the oral presentation of scholarly work; three students received it at the April 2026 awards ceremony. The 2026 ceremony program also lists the George Henry Bridgman Poetry Prize, the Nurith Zmora Prize in History, the Emma Kay Malmstrom Research Award and the Eliza A. Drew Prize, which has categories for English essays and short stories as well as editorial and news writing.
BFA students compile and edit Runestone, a national online annual of undergraduate poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction, with graduate students as associate editors. The Creative Writing Programs also publish rock, paper, scissors, written and edited by Hamline students, and Water~Stone Review, a magazine founded in 1998 and staffed by graduate assistants.
Graduate Awards and Capstones
The MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults lists ten scholarships and fellowships. They include the $5,000 T.A. Barron Fellowship for Fantasy Writing for current students and the $1,000 Anne Tews Schwab Scholarship in Critical Writing, given for the best extended critical essay by a third-semester student. In the MFA in Creative Writing, assistantships for research, editing and teaching each carry a $1,000 tuition reduction, and the Deborah Keenan Poetry Scholarship pays $1,000.
Master's and doctoral students in the School of Education and Leadership deposit their final work in the Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations collection, which holds EdD, MAEd, MAESL, MALED and MAT work.
Writing Center
The Writing and Communication Center is on the lower level of Bush Memorial Library. Peer tutors, all Hamline sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students, meet undergraduates and graduate students free of charge for 30 or 60 minutes. Sessions can be in person, by live video, or asynchronous, with written comments left on the draft. Speeches and presentations can be rehearsed there too.
Before an honors project, MFA capstone or EdD dissertation goes to readers, our editors can give it a last pass for grammar, consistency and format. See our Hamline University dissertation and thesis editing and Hamline University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
