Grants and Writing Resources for Hebrew University of Jerusalem
In January 2026 the President of Israel's Scholarships for Scientific Excellence and Innovation went to 12 doctoral students in the whole country, and six of them were Hebrew University doctoral candidates, more than from any other institution. Three work in the Faculty of Medicine; the others are in chemistry, psychology and dental medicine.
Doctoral Travel Funding
The Authority for Research Students offers short-trip travel scholarships to doctoral students who will give a lecture or poster at a conference abroad, or whose research needs work that can't be done in Israel: an archive or library, data collection, training in a special skill, or unique equipment. Applicants must be in the second stage of the doctorate, within five total years of doctoral study, and must not have had an Authority travel scholarship before. As of February 2025 the grant ran from 3,700 shekels for European destinations to 6,600 shekels for Australia. It is paid after the trip, on proof of the flight.
The university's Inclusion and Diversity Unit offers scholarships for outstanding doctoral students from groups underrepresented in academia. The money pays for travel abroad to international conferences, workshops, courses and professional training. A committee of at least two academic staff members from different faculties, joined by the Vice President for Strategy and Diversity, chooses the recipients.
Rules for the Doctoral Dissertation
The Regulations for Research Students, updated in January 2023, allow a dissertation in Hebrew or English. Other languages in the humanities and social sciences need approval from the head of the Authority, and an academic unit may require Hebrew. Student and supervisor choose the format: a monograph written as a single unit, or a collection of chapters (an "Assupa") in which the student is the sole or principal author and researcher of each. A unit may limit that choice.
Submission runs through an online system, which also collects the supervisor's written opinion and a form proposing judges. The Authority appoints two judges in addition to the supervisor. Once a dissertation is approved, the Authority deposits a digital copy in the relevant library.
Help With Writing
The Faculty of Humanities runs a Writing Center for personal help with academic writing. Sessions are one-on-one, free and up to 45 minutes long. The mentors are advanced students who did well in research writing in humanities departments and were trained for the role. Students ask for a session by writing to Writing.Center@huji.ac.il. More than five sessions on a first paper, or more than two on a later one, needs prior approval.
Where Student Work Appears
Founded in 1968 as Israel's first academic law review, Mishpatim is the Hebrew University Law Review. The Faculty of Law describes it as the only solely student-administered law review in Israel. Editors are picked from the Faculty of Law's classes through a competitive admissions process. A board of alumni, faculty and independent directors guides the journal, and the student editors make the editorial decisions.
Before a seminar paper, thesis or dissertation goes to a supervisor or judges, our editors can give it a final check for grammar, consistency and format.
