Grants and Writing Resources for Hofstra University

In the 2025-2026 academic year Hofstra students won a Rhodes Scholarship, a Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship and a Goldwater Scholarship. The Rhodes went to a biology major, who begins at Oxford in fall 2026. A student in the School-Community PsyD program won the Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship in Public Health for summer 2026 in Ghana, and a computer science and mathematics major is a Goldwater Scholar for 2026-27.

Research Funding

Firestone Fellowships pay a $2,500 stipend for a summer of research in the humanities or social sciences under a faculty mentor. Sophomores and juniors apply with a one-page proposal and a letter from the mentor, and faculty may nominate students who plan to write an honors thesis the following year. A committee of three faculty recommends candidates to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Each fellow submits a brief written report when the summer ends.

Undergraduates with a liberal arts and sciences major can apply for Transformative Learning Grants, paid as reimbursements. Housing during a summer research experience is an accepted expense, along with study abroad and internship costs. Rabinowitz Honors College students can also apply to work as paid research assistants on faculty teams.

Presenting the Work

The Provost's Office helps fund conference presentations of research done at Hofstra, from posters and papers to film, dance and dramatic work. Students who graduated within the past year still qualify. Undergraduates request support through their school dean's office, and graduate students apply to the Graduate Travel Fund. Funded students are expected to present at the next Undergraduate or Graduate Research Day.

Undergraduate Research & Creativity Day takes place at the end of each semester, with a poster session open to every school, performances and an art and design exhibit. Hofstra Horizons for Undergraduate and Graduate Research is a companion to the Hofstra Horizons that covers faculty research.

Honors Theses

Seniors with a 3.4 overall GPA and a 3.5 in the major can write a departmental honors thesis, provided they have 60 semester hours in residence at Hofstra, 15 of them in the major. The course carries 3 credits, and some departments require two semesters and 6 credits. The thesis requires a presentation and oral defense, and students may present at Undergraduate Research Day in December or May.

In the English Department the honors project can be a researched essay or a creative manuscript. Rabinowitz Honors College students who reach a 3.6 GPA and complete a departmental honors course graduate with distinction.

Journals and National Scholarships

Junior and senior publishing studies students earn credit for editing, producing and promoting Windmill, the English Department's in-house literary journal. The Hofstra English Society publishes the student journal Font. Junior and senior English majors with at least 12 hours of English at Hofstra, a 3.5 GPA in English and a 3.0 overall are eligible for the campus chapter of Sigma Tau Delta.

For national awards, the Associate Provost for Academic Support and Global Initiatives serves as the prestigious scholarships advisor. The office advises students to start early and notes that strong candidates usually hold a GPA well above 3.0, often above 3.5.

Writing Center and Thesis Submission

The Writing Center in Room 102 Mason Hall gives current undergraduate and graduate students free one-to-one help, in person or online. Asynchronous appointments and paper drop-off return feedback in about 24 hours. Walk-in hours are also held at the Fried Center and the SAS Study Hall in Roosevelt Hall.

Sessions last 45 minutes and are conversation based, covering genre, audience expectations and revision. The tutors are faculty who teach or have taught composition and creative writing, along with student tutors from many majors, and one faculty tutor works with students on the dissertation process.

Master's theses and doctoral dissertations are submitted online through ProQuest's ETD Administrator, and the Serials Office of Axinn Library reviews each submission. Formatting, title page and copyright page requirements come from the student's department.

Before an honors thesis or dissertation goes to ProQuest, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format. See our Hofstra University dissertation and thesis editing and Hofstra University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
