Grants and Writing Resources for Hong Kong Polytechnic University
First and second place in the BSOMES Research Prize 2025 both went to undergraduates from PolyU's Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering. Their entries were picked from a pool of research submissions, and the two were honoured at the BSOMES annual dinner. Closer to home, PhD students in mechanical engineering came away with awards at the 3rd PolyU Research Student Conference in July 2025, including a Best Presentation Award.
Help With Writing
The English Language Centre runs the Writing Assistance Programme, modelled on North American university writing centres. Students in UGC-funded degree or higher diploma programmes can book one-to-one sessions of up to 50 minutes or drop in. Teachers work on idea development, paragraph organisation, paraphrasing and referencing, and grammar. They point out errors for you to fix yourself.
Presenting Research
The Graduate School organises the PolyU Research Student Conference, which research postgraduate students lead. Its 2025 edition ran 2 to 4 July and took submissions on any topic from research postgraduates at every stage, along with undergraduates in the College of Undergraduate Researchers and Innovators. Best Paper, Best Presentation and Best Poster awards come with cash prizes.
Undergraduate Research
Undergraduates can apply to the Undergraduate Research and Innovation Scheme, a two-year programme that pairs a student with a full-time faculty supervisor and pays a scholarship plus a project grant, subject to progress review. Admission brings automatic membership in the College of Undergraduate Researchers and Innovators. Over 200 undergraduates turned up to the February 2025 information session for the 2025/26 cohort.
Fellowships and Conference Grants
Every research postgraduate student is meant to receive a Conference Grant for presenting a paper or poster at a recognised conference in their field. It's capped at HK$20,000 per application and HK$25,000 over the whole degree, and it can cover economy airfare, registration, visa fees and a nightly subsistence allowance. Prior approval and the chief supervisor's endorsement are required.
The PolyU Presidential PhD Fellowship Scheme lists an annual stipend of HK$340,800, a tuition fee waiver, a HK$25,000 conference grant, a cash award for research and living expenses, and a year of hall accommodation. Applicants need exceptional academic achievements and high-quality international publications.
