Grants and Writing Resources for Iona University

On March 23, 2026, a biology major in Iona's Class of 2026 gave an invited talk at the American Chemical Society's Presidential Symposium in Atlanta, one of six undergraduates in the country chosen to speak. Her research comes out of Project Symphony, Iona's undergraduate group studying how bioactive molecules act on cell membranes. That August an accounting major in the LaPenta School of Business was named a 2026-2027 PCAOB Scholar, one of 677 students selected nationwide.

Scholars Day

Iona Scholars Day began in 2009 as an undergraduate event and added graduate students in 2014. The 17th annual Iona Scholars Day was held on April 16, 2026. The year before, the 16th edition showed nearly 200 projects in fields from chemistry and nursing to sports media.

A project can start as a course assignment or as independent work with a faculty member. Posters go on a 48 by 36 inch panel. Panel talks run 10 to 15 minutes with about five minutes for questions, and fine and performing arts students submit video or visual work to a community gallery.

Honors Theses and Grants

Seniors in the Honors Program pick a culminating experience, and one option is a thesis or research project worth 3 or 6 credits. The finished project is presented at Scholars Day before a student can complete the program. Completers receive an honors medal and an Honors seal on the Iona diploma.

The program's American Express Grant Fund makes awards twice a year. Students use it for research, study abroad, and attending or presenting at conferences and workshops.

Early American Research

The Institute for Thomas Paine Studies runs a paid, for-credit internship program in public and digital history. Partners include George Washington's Mount Vernon, the Thomas Paine Cottage Museum and the New York City Law Department.

Iona joined the McNeil Center consortium at the University of Pennsylvania in fall 2017. Juniors and seniors writing an honors thesis or research paper in early American studies can apply to its Undergraduate Research Workshop. Workshop students tour Philadelphia's archives, attend the Center's Friday Seminars and present their research at a conference at Penn.

Master's Theses and Graduate Aid

Students in the MA in Psychology, General-Experimental Specialization must write a thesis. Thesis Supervision is a three-credit course inside the 36-credit degree, open after 18 to 30 credits in psychology and with department approval. Graduate students in the program may also assist faculty with research.

Iona considers every graduate student for merit scholarships. The Edmund Rice Scholarship is a 5% tuition award for entering students with an undergraduate GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Tutoring and Citation Help

The Samuel Rudin Academic Resource Center in Amend Hall gives free peer and professional tutoring to full- and part-time students, graduate students and returning adults included. Walk-in service is generally available for reviewing papers. For a Virtual Rudin session, students upload the writing assignment to Iona's OneDrive at least two hours ahead.

The library's Research Essentials guide covers choosing a topic, database searching and evaluating sources. Its Citing Sources guide gives examples and sample papers in MLA, APA, Chicago/Turabian, ACS, CSE and ASA style.

An honors thesis or a psychology master's thesis can come to us for a final edit of grammar, consistency and format before it reaches the adviser. See our Iona University dissertation and thesis editing and Iona University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
