Grants and Writing Resources for Jackson State University

Jackson State's men's track and field team won the 2026 SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Baton Rouge with 142 points, 32 ahead of second-place Texas Southern. It was the program's first title since 1990.

Paying for Graduate Study

A Graduate Assistantship pays a monthly stipend plus tuition for the fall and spring of one academic year. Assistants hold a 3.00 average, carry at least 9 semester hours each term and work at least 12 hours a week in a master's program or 15 in a doctoral program, never more than 20. Applications go to the department chair or academic dean of the student's major field.

The Graduate Tuition-Waiver uses the same form and covers anywhere from part to all of tuition. For outside money, the Division of Graduate Studies lists Phi Kappa Phi fellowships and dissertation fellowships and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship.

The Richard Wright Center

JSU's writing center is the Richard Wright Center for Writing, Rhetoric, and Research, on the first floor of the H. T. Sampson Library. Sessions are free and open to students at every level. Writers can meet an advisor online, in the center or on a walk-and-talk appointment.

Undergraduates get weekly 30-minute virtual workshops on thesis statements, citation, AI in writing and personal statements. Graduate students have hour-long sessions on research proposals, the literature review and the methodology chapter. Through its graduate support the center gives written feedback on a proposal or a thesis or dissertation chapter, and students can rehearse a defense there.

Format Review and Outside Editors

The Division of Graduate Studies reviews every dissertation before it goes to ProQuest, and manuscripts that depart from the format requirements come back for correction. The Wright Center posts the rules, a thesis and dissertation template updated in October 2025, a manuscript submission checklist, and checklists for APA and Turabian. Theses and dissertations through 2011-2012 are listed by academic year on the graduate school's Dissertation & Thesis page.

Wright Center tutors work with students as they develop their ideas and offer strategies for editing and proofreading. For paid help, the center's professional editor page lists independent editors and asks students to consider consulting a professor or advisor before hiring one.

After you have talked with your professor or advisor, our editors can check a thesis or dissertation for grammar, consistency and format before it goes to Graduate Studies.
