Grants and Writing Resources for Jacksonville University

At the College Media Association's College Mediafest, the student editors of Aquarian, Jacksonville University's literary magazine, placed fourth in the nation for Best in Show, the category that judges a magazine's design and content together, the university reported in November 2025. The magazine has been edited by JU students for more than five decades and takes work from every major.

Presenting Research

Each spring the JU Research and Scholarship Symposium fills the lobby and conference rooms of the Davis College of Business and Technology with student work, from first-year projects to graduate research. Presenters choose a poster or a podium talk, and the work has to be research-based, such as data gathered in an independent study. A best poster and a best podium presentation are named in each session. Swisher Library keeps a symposium guide with research consultations, subject databases and citation help for students getting ready to present.

Students in the Honors Program meet the same expectation from another direction. The Honors Laureate track requires a research project in the major and a public presentation.

Research Funding

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs runs two internal awards for students. Student RCAS Grants (Research, Creative Activity, and Scholarship) are competitive seed grants for graduate and undergraduate students starting new lines of inquiry, including collecting and analyzing pilot data; proposals need a narrative, a budget and a mentor statement. Florida Conference Travel Funding reimburses up to $500 for registration, lodging, mileage, parking and tolls, with priority for students going to the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference.

Travel awards are reimbursed against itemized receipts. Meals aren't covered.

Student Journals

Aquarian publishes poetry, prose, 2D and 3D art, photography, and audio and video work by JU students. Students can send up to ten pieces through Submittable using their school email, and most submissions come in during the fall semester. The staff meets weekly and welcomes students from any major.

Help With Writing

The Writing Center in Swisher Library works on any undergraduate assignment with a written component, at any stage from finding sources to building a Works Cited page. Sessions run in person or virtually through Bb Collaborate, and students can also email a Word file with the assignment instructions and expect a reply in one to two days. Walk-ins are welcome. Graduate students book with a dedicated graduate writing consultant who keeps a separate schedule of virtual and in-person hours.
