Grants and Writing Resources for Laurentian University
At the 2026 Intercollegiate Mine Emergency Response Competition, which Laurentian hosted in Sudbury for the first time, the university's Mine Rescue Club placed first overall against eight other university teams from Canada and the United States, among them the Colorado School of Mines and West Virginia University. Later in 2026 a Master of Forensic Sciences student took thesis research to Montreal as a poster at the 31st Congress of the International Society for Forensic Genetics. The project examines 52 short tandem repeat markers across 315 individuals to improve DNA profiling from degraded evidence.
Summer Research Awards
In summer 2026, 24 Laurentian undergraduates held Undergraduate Student Research Awards funded by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC, working full time on faculty research for 16 weeks from May to August. Their projects ranged widely. A fourth-year zoology student analyzed 54 years of midland painted turtle nesting data from Algonquin Provincial Park, a fourth-year architecture student studied urban design that supports children's well-being in mid-sized cities, and a third-year biomedical biology student compared yeast growth under normal and extremely low background radiation at SNOLAB.
The Office of Research Services posts the NSERC USRA call on its funding opportunities page.
Graduate Scholarships
The deans of each Faculty allocate the Dean's Entrance Scholarship to a limited number of meritorious graduate students, $1,500 for master's students and $3,000 for doctoral students, with no application required. Registered graduate students can also apply for donor-funded awards. The same page lists the external awards Laurentian students compete for, including the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC master's awards of $27,000 for twelve months, doctoral awards of $40,000 a year for up to 36 months, and the Ontario Women's Health Scholars Award, which for 2026–27 pays doctoral recipients $35,000 plus a $2,000 research allowance.
