Grants and Writing Resources for Lehigh University
Lehigh's 2026–27 Fulbright cycle was the largest in the university's history: 11 awardees, where the previous high was six in 2018–19. Two are students or recent graduates. A 2024 graduate will teach English in Cameroon, and a member of the class of 2026 will do marine biology research in the Dominican Republic.
Writing Prizes
The Williams Prizes have rewarded student writing and performance since 1908. Entries must come from work done for a Lehigh course or internship, and the categories spread across campus: business and economics, creative writing, first-year and upper-level composition, history and political science, seven modern languages from Arabic to Spanish, music composition, philosophy, religion studies, the social sciences, journalism, theatre and spoken word. Undergraduates can win up to $1,000 per entry, according to Student Affairs' list of campus writing opportunities.
The Kachel Prize gives six awards a year, four through the Department of Journalism and two through English. Social science research papers by undergraduate and graduate students compete for the Campbell Prize, $1,000 per winning paper, listed among the Graduate School's funding resources.
Student Journals
Amaranth is Lehigh's official literary magazine, and Voices, formerly International Voices, is a student-run magazine of art, poetry and creative writing open to submissions from across the Lehigh community. Reporting goes to The Brown and White, the student newspaper, staffed through the Journalism Department. Amaranth's submission contact is on the campus writing opportunities page.
Presenting Research
The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science has run the David and Lorraine Freed Undergraduate Research Symposium since 2005. In April 2026, 38 students presented 24 projects to a panel of judges at the Clayton University Center. The top presenters receive travel stipends to take their work to professional conferences.
Summer research ends with an annual expo of its own, held again in July 2025. At the Lehigh Summer Research Expo in August 2024, about 200 students presented 100 projects in Building C on the Mountaintop Campus, drawn from the Mountaintop Summer Program, STEM-SI, the Marcon Institute Fellows and The Hatchery.
Graduate Writing and Research Funding
Graduate Education and Life runs the Graduate Writers Studio, which offers online and in-person writing consultations and academic coaching. Its writing groups and retreats give graduate students set time for theses, dissertations and proposals. Just Writes meets every week of the semester for two hours, in Packer House and on Zoom, opening with goal setting and closing with a round of sharing accomplishments and challenges. Saturday Write-Ins run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of each full month of the semester, with lunch for those who stay the full day, and the studio also holds a Destination Writing Retreat. STEM students preparing NSF Graduate Research Fellowship applications can join a working group that drafts fellowship statements over the summer and early fall.
For conferences, case competitions and archive trips, the Graduate School lists its travel funding sources: the GSS Travel Grant from the Graduate Student Senate, Doctoral Travel Grants for International Connections, and a travel fund from the College of Education Diversity Committee. In the humanities, the Humanities Center has offered research grants that help graduate students finish their dissertations.
Help With Writing

Packer Avenue offers writing tutoring to undergraduates, graduate students, staff and faculty in 30-minute sessions with an English Department graduate student. Sessions run in person, by video or through a paper submission, and cover any stage from brainstorming to final revision. Tuition covers it.
