Grants and Writing Resources for LMU Munich
LMU's team took silver at the Paul-Ehrlich-Contest in Ulm in late June 2026, finishing second among 16 student teams from three countries in a contest of medical knowledge and practical skills. The five students had trained for a year for two days of competition.
Writing Support
The University Library's Schreibzentrum gives free, individual writing consultations to students and doctoral candidates, run online or in person by trained peer tutors. Bring a term paper, a protocol, a thesis or a dissertation. Writing workshops appear in the library's course calendar, and open writing groups meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 to 13:00 at Schellingstraße 3, with no registration, including during the lecture-free period. The centre's handouts on academic writing are published through LMU's open-access server.
Funding for Doctoral Researchers
The GraduateCenter's LMU Travel Grant pays for research stays and for presenting a talk or poster at a conference, up to €900 over the whole doctorate. Each trip can draw up to €300 for destinations within 750 km and up to €600 for 750 to 3,000 km. It's meant for doctoral candidates with no other source of travel money, so members of doctoral programmes that fund travel, collaborative research centres (SFBs) and clusters of excellence can't apply.
For the last stretch before submission, the LMU Completion Grant pays outstanding doctoral researchers €1,350 a month for up to six months; the page currently lists no open call. The GraduateCenter's funding page also offers stipends for LERU Doctoral Summer Schools and points to foundations, the Begabtenförderungswerke and the DAAD.
Presenting Research
Doctoral researchers explain their projects in 180 seconds at the annual GC Speed Slam. The same office runs transferable-skills workshops in German and English, sorted by phase of the doctorate, from orientation and writing through the final phase, and by discipline.
Where Dissertations Are Published
LMU dissertations can be published electronically, in print or both. The electronic route puts the whole thesis, as a single PDF, in the library's Electronic Academic Theses repository before the mandatory copies are printed; Open Publishing LMU offers a hybrid edition that appears with a publisher and in open access at the same time. For articles, any LMU member who is the corresponding author of a gold open-access publication can apply to the LMU Open Access Fund, financed by the German Research Foundation, for a fixed subsidy toward the publication fee. DEAL and other publisher agreements add discounted open-access terms.
For a final edit before submission, our PhD-level editors work with LMU students at every level. See our LMU Munich dissertation and thesis editing and LMU Munich essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
