Grants and Writing Resources for London School of Economics and Political Science
On 8 October 2025, LSE honoured 44 first-year undergraduates from 14 departments at the LSE100 Award Winners Reception, out of more than 1,800 students in the 2024/25 cohort. The Raymond Huang Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement went to the top 9 of 360 groups for their interdisciplinary research projects.
Student Journals
Houghton Street Press hosts 19 student journals, among them the LSE Law Review, the LSE Undergraduate Political Review and the LSE Journal of Geography and Environment. The Eden Centre's guide to undergraduate publication outlets describes the press as the student imprint of LSE Press, launched in October 2019, and sets out who each journal takes work from. Some are open to students at any university. The Undergraduate Political Review also runs research teams that do original group research each year with the goal of publication.
The Knowles Review of Economic History is annual and peer-reviewed, supported by the Department of Economic History and open to students from undergraduate to doctoral level worldwide; Volume 5 appeared in 2026. Philosophy writers have Rerum Causae, the LSE Student Philosophy Society's journal, which takes submissions from any LSE student on any programme.
Dissertation and Thesis Prizes
Master's students who write on the Middle East and North Africa can enter the Middle East Centre's Master's Dissertation Prize, now in its sixth round. First prize is £250 and second is £150. Entries need a mark of at least 70, and winners are invited to write for the Middle East Centre Blog.
At doctoral level, the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa awards the Tim Allen PhD Thesis Prize every two years to a thesis on an African subject from any LSE department. Each department can submit no more than one thesis.
Help With Writing
Undergraduates and master's students use the Learning Lab, LSE's centre for study support, for workshops and one-to-one sessions with a study adviser, in person or online. Master's students get dissertation support at every step of the way, and LSE LIFE stays open on weekdays through the summer break, up to dissertation hand-in.
The PhD Academy runs 90-minute academic writing sessions for doctoral students. It also points them to the Centre for Language Studies, which offers a two-term Thesis Writing course and one-to-one coaching on academic writing.
Where Theses Are Published
LSE Theses Online is the school's online archive of completed and examined PhD theses, browsable by year. Not every print thesis has been digitised yet, so the collection is partial.
