Grants and Writing Resources for Loughborough University

Athletes linked to Loughborough won 45 medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the University's medal list marks several winners as current students. One of them rode in the women's cycling sprint team that took gold. Another, a track cyclist, finished the men's 1000m time trial in 59.525 seconds for his second silver medal of the Games.

Money for Doctoral Research

The Doctoral College runs the Doctoral Researcher Support Fund, a competitive award of up to £600 for activity in the UK, £800 elsewhere in Europe and £2,000 for activity outside Europe. Full-time postgraduate research students can also apply for the John Guest Phillips Travelling Scholarship, worth up to £500. A separate Research Culture and Community Fund pays for events, provided doctoral researchers lead them.

Each year the University holds PhD Awards for doctoral researchers and the staff who support them. Among the 2026 categories were a Significant Contribution to Knowledge Award and a Doctoral Researcher Teaching Excellence Award.

Master's Scholarships

Loughborough lists its master's funding with a year of entry for each award. For January 2027 and September 2027 entry, Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships take up to £6,000 off tuition fees for master's students at the Loughborough and London campuses. The Postgraduate Future Leaders Scholarship, for international students who show leadership potential, is £10,000 off tuition fees for September 2027 entry. Loughborough graduates starting a master's that September receive the Alumni Discount of up to £3,000.

Talented athletes starting a master's in September 2027 can apply for a Loughborough Sports Scholarship. Its value, up to £5,000, depends on the sport and the level of performance.

Help With Academic Writing

Academic Language and Study Skills (ALSS) runs its support through modules on Learn, with on-demand resources and bookable workshops in person and online. Academic Skills is open to students at all levels of study. Dissertation and Project Success is for anyone writing a project, dissertation or thesis, and English Language Support is for students whose first language is not English.

The University's study support list adds a STEM Writing module and the Academic Librarians, who give specialist advice on information-related questions by email or MS Teams.

Proofreading Rules and Thesis Submission

Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students follow a guidance note on proofreading. It defines proofreading as checking for errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence construction, formatting and layout, and its section on digital tools limits proofreading to correcting those errors without changing the substance, argument or intended meaning of the work. The rules apply the same way to professional services, digital tools, friends and family. Translating work written in a first language falls outside proofreading. Students carry sole responsibility for making sure third-party proofreading does not compromise the intellectual contribution of their work, and should keep drafts and any prompts used. Amendments so substantial that the work is no longer the student's can count as contract cheating, and third-party proofreading is no defence in a misconduct case.

Doctoral researchers submit the thesis through the Doctoral College Office. Each must certify in writing how far the submission is their work and include the Certificate of Originality, Thesis Access Conditions and Deposit Agreement. After the official letter confirming the award, the final thesis goes into the Research Repository. The Code of Practice on Research Degree Programmes sets out the standard and alternative thesis formats, and has a section on the PhD by creative writing.

Our editors work inside the limits of Loughborough's proofreading guidance: spelling, punctuation, grammar, formatting and layout, with the substance, argument and meaning left as you wrote them.
