Grants and Writing Resources for Marywood University
Marywood reported in August 2026 that a third-year Doctor of Psychology student had research accepted by the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching. Her study took a classroom activity that had reduced mental illness stigma in face-to-face classes and tested it in an online psychology course. Two months earlier, a Ph.D. candidate in Strategic Leadership and Administrative Studies received the Penn State Berks Research and Scholarship Support Award for her dissertation on moral injury among mid-level academic affairs leaders.
Honors Theses and Fellowship Advising
The Honors Program ends with an Honors Thesis, a 3-credit independent study in the student's major, written over two semesters. Each writer works with a committee made up of a faculty director, a reader and the honors program director. Scientia, published each year, honors students who complete the program. The program also funds research and travel to regional and national conferences.
Honors students get advising for national and international scholarships such as Truman, Goldwater and Gilman. For Fulbright, a campus committee reviews juniors' materials and prepares them for the interview. Every other year the Corcoran Scholarship, from the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Lackawanna County, gives $5,000 to a qualified student for study in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Medals and Student Writing
Marywood presents its academic medals at Hooding and Honors ceremonies. Two go to writers: the J. Harold Brislin Medal for Distinction in Creative Writing, named for a Pulitzer Prize winner, and the Sister M. Charitas Loftus Medal for Excellence in Poetry. Two more recognize research. The William G. McGowan Medal for Excellence in Doctoral Studies is given in the Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs, and the Francis L. and Kathryn Melvin Medal recognizes excellence in scholarly investigation.
The Bayleaf, the student literary magazine, put out its first issue in May 1919 with original poems and short stories. It is still published today.
Graduate Funding
Academic graduate assistantships pay $20 an hour, up to $8,000 a year in a full-time position. Full-time assistants also receive tuition remission for 4.5 credits in the fall and 4.5 in the spring. Assistants carry at least six graduate credits a semester and keep a 3.25 GPA.
Some awards belong to a single program. The Joan and Fred Miller Endowment Fund helps Ph.D. students pay tuition in the fall and spring semesters; it does not go toward dissertation credits. In social work, the Schierling Grant provides $15,000 a year for MSW students' international airfare and four weeks of room and board, and it may also pay airfare and registration when a student's paper is accepted at an international conference.
Help With Writing and Dissertations
The Writing Center books 30-, 45- and 60-minute sessions in the Learning Commons or on Zoom. Undergraduates meet peer tutors in Room 266. The Writing Specialist in Room 265 sees every Marywood student, graduate students included, and is the suggested first stop for multilingual writers. Tutors help format citations in APA, MLA, Chicago and other styles, and they also read scholarship essays and graduate school application materials.
In the Ph.D. in Strategic Leadership and Administrative Studies, candidates pass a Qualifying Seminar, take a Pre-Dissertation Seminar and then write under a faculty chair and committee. The program runs a dissertation-writing workshop and assigns research mentors who help turn a dissertation into a manuscript with the student as first author. It also publishes the Journal of Applied Professional Studies, an online, blind peer-reviewed journal indexed by EBSCO.
