Grants and Writing Resources for Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
At the 36th annual Student Research Symposium in Rochester in October 2025, the dean said the school's students had published 316 papers in scientific journals and been named on 37 patents the previous year. The symposium drew more than 250 posters and talks from PhD and MD-PhD students on all of Mayo's campuses.
Presenting Research
The graduate school and its Graduate Student Association hosted both the 2024 and 2025 symposiums. In 2025, eight students, one selected from each of the eight graduate tracks, gave scientific talks. At the 2024 symposium, faculty and postdoctoral judges gave first and third place in the poster competition to students in biochemistry and molecular biology, with second going to biomedical engineering and physiology.
Shorter talks get their own contest. Nine students entered the Three Minute Thesis competition at the 2024 symposium, where the People's Choice Award went to a student in virology and gene therapy. In 2025, seven students presented to a panel of non-scientist judges, and the top speaker won travel grants and the chance to advance to the 2026 Midwest Association of Graduate Schools event in Kansas City.
Funding
Every PhD student gets a five-year internal fellowship covering full tuition, stipend and benefits. Students choose their own mentors and don't have to serve as teaching assistants.
Writing Courses
Grant writing is part of the curriculum. In MGS 5050, Critical Thinking and Scientific Writing, students draft an NIH-style specific aims page and critique each other's drafts; the follow-up, MGS 5051, has them write a small NIH-style grant proposal that classmates review as a study section would. Master's students register for MGS 6100 when their thesis protocol is approved, and the Responsible Conduct of Research course covers authorship, publication and peer review.
