Grants and Writing Resources for Memorial University of Newfoundland
In December 2024, Newfoundland and Labrador named a recent Memorial political science honours graduate its 2025 Rhodes Scholar; she was already working on a master's in global health, specializing in governance, and will go on to graduate study at Oxford. Her old department hosts Mapping Politics, a student-led political science journal that reached its twelfth volume in spring 2026.
Student Journals
Memorial University Libraries hosts Open Journals at Memorial, and several of its titles print student work. Bookish publishes undergraduate essays and multimodal pieces from any discipline, plus a spotlight on first-year writing; professors nominate the essays, with the student's permission. Its second volume came out in 2025.
Mapping Politics takes political science papers from undergraduate and master's students at universities across Canada. Founded by graduate students in 1976 and now run by graduate students in Folklore and Ethnomusicology, Culture & Tradition is an annual that accepts essays, reviews, autoethnography, and creative work in English or French from undergraduates, graduate students, and emerging professionals.
Help With Writing
The old Writing Centre's services are being merged into CITL's Student Learning Solutions. Its peer tutoring for academic writing runs in person in the Education Building and online, with undergraduate tutors working with undergraduates and graduate tutors with graduate students. Tutors won't proofread for you. They work through organization, argument, evidence, and tone first, then grammar, and there's no cap on how many sessions you book.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
Graduate students who present a paper or poster at a conference outside Memorial can apply to the School of Graduate Studies for travel funding. Federal money for master's and doctoral study comes through the Tri-Council scholarships from NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR, including the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship, which pays doctoral holders $40,000 a year for 36 months.
At convocation, Memorial's graduate awards and medals include a University Medal for excellence in a thesis-based master's program and the CAGS-ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award, a $1,500 national prize for an outstanding Canadian doctoral dissertation. Final-year students can also be nominated as a Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies, a once-only distinction for outstanding achievement across a whole program that appears on the transcript.
Thesis Guidelines
The School of Graduate Studies publishes its Thesis and Report Guidelines, covering a thesis's required parts, formatting, authorship, and copyright and publication.
