Grants and Writing Resources for Midwestern University

In August 2026 Midwestern reported that a student at its Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM) had been named a 2026-27 Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellow. The fellowship project will teach immigrant families in Pilsen when to call 911, how to communicate with first responders, and lifesaving skills including two-step CPR and Stop the Bleed. During the American Medical Association's 2026 Annual Meeting in June, one CCOM student received the AMA Region 2 Student Advocate of the Year Award and another was elected Region 2 Secretary of the Medical Student Section's executive board.

Research Day on Each Campus

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs lists a Kenneth A. Suarez Research Day on each campus. The Glendale event on April 10, 2026, had 207 poster presentations, 172 of them student posters eligible for judging. The program carried 20 college-specific awards for outstanding student posters and two oral presentation awards, and each student winner received a plaque and $250.

The Downers Grove Research Day, reported in May 2026, filled Cardinal Hall with 210 student research posters from every college on that campus and 16 student talks, some in a rapid-fire format.

Fellowships, Travel and Scholarships

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs funds student research fellowships, prints research posters for students, and supports student travel to present research at national conferences.

Midwestern's institutional scholarships are generally awarded on academic standing, financial need, letters of recommendation and essays, and students apply through the student portal. The College of Graduate Studies offers a Dean's Scholarship to Master of Arts and Master of Biomedical Sciences students on both campuses. The same page lists the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship among outside awards open to students in all programs.

Writing Help From Learning Specialists and Librarians

Learning Specialist Services are free to every currently enrolled student. Each campus has a learning specialist, in The Commons in Downers Grove and in Barrel IV in Glendale, who works on writing along with time management and study strategy. A first appointment usually runs 45 to 60 minutes, and the specialist recommends a success plan.

The library's Writing Support guide splits the work. Learning specialists help with the logical organization of a paper or dissertation and with a professional tone. Librarians provide resources for AMA or APA setup, show students how to build in-text citations and reference lists, and teach database selection. The guide notes that its learning specialists and librarians do not proofread or copy edit. Separate guides cover AMA 11th edition and APA 7th edition.

Theses, Dissertations and Publishing

In the Master of Biomedical Sciences, students complete research thesis projects with faculty mentors. The 2026-27 Downers Grove M.B.S. curriculum runs Laboratory Research for Thesis courses from the first spring onward and places Thesis Proposal in the second summer and Thesis in the second spring.

Psy.D. students in Clinical Psychology take Dissertation Proposal I through IV in the third professional year and Dissertation I through IV in the fourth, according to the 2026-27 Downers Grove curriculum. Students who need more time register for half-credit Dissertation Continuation courses with the Program Director's approval. For articles and case reports, the library's Getting Published guide covers choosing a journal, open access and authorship. It also offers Covidence for systematic reviews, with registration through a midwestern.edu email address.

Before a thesis, dissertation or manuscript goes to a committee or a journal, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and AMA or APA format.
