Grants and Writing Resources for Montclair State University

Three Montclair State student teachers received New Jersey Distinguished Clinical Intern Awards from the state Department of Education in June 2026. The university chose them from about 300 eligible students and more than 70 nominees, and every nominee wrote an essay on a significant challenge in clinical practice and how it shaped the intern's growth. One honoree finished a double major in biology and secondary education in four years. Another arrived in the Master of Arts in Teaching program with an anthropology degree and no teaching background, and graduated in two years.

Research Grants and the Symposium

The Office of Research funds student projects through the Student-Led Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (SL-RSCA) Grants Program. It is a one-year internal grant worth up to $2,000 for undergraduates and up to $5,000 for graduate students. Theses, dissertations, capstones and culminating applied projects all qualify, with a faculty member as mentor. The awardee list grew from 16 in fiscal year 2025 to 28 in fiscal year 2027, when six undergraduates, nine master's students and 13 doctoral students were funded.

Finished work can go on a poster at the Student Research Symposium, open to all current undergraduate and graduate students. Each presenter makes one poster that summarizes the whole project and stays with it to answer questions. Proposals that cross disciplinary lines are encouraged.

Fellowships and Doctoral Funding

Students and alumni aiming at the Goldwater, Truman, Marshall, Rhodes, Gilman or Fulbright can work with Prestigious Scholarships in the Undergraduate Education Office. Its staff review essays and applications, line up faculty support and hold mock interviews for finalists. Awards that need a university endorsement go through an internal selection first. Fulbright applicants also complete an Applicant Support Interview with the Montclair Campus Committee, as the Fulbright Programs page from International Academic Initiatives explains.

In the PhD in Mathematics Education, Westerdahl Fellowships pay full tuition and a $25,000 annual stipend, renewable for up to four years, and go competitively to full-time applicants with financial need. Grant-funded doctoral fellowships in the same program carry a stipend usually around $22,000 and a tuition waiver of 18 to 24 credits a year, with research duties that generally run 20 hours a week.

Where Student Work Appears

The Normal Review is the university's official literary arts publication, run by students and printing poetry, prose, creative nonfiction and drama by Montclair students. Members vote on the submissions. The Digital Commons archive holds issues from Fall 2012 through Spring 2026.

Graduate theses are collected in Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects, the Digital Commons collection that holds every Montclair State thesis from 2010 on.

Help With Writing and Theses

The Center for Writing Excellence meets with students, faculty, staff and alumni in person or on Zoom. Standard appointments and drop-ins run 25 minutes. Graduate students can ask for 50-minute extended appointments.

The Graduate Center posts culminating activity guides for the master's thesis and the doctoral dissertation, with procedure manuals, a final review checklist and two Canvas courses, Master Your Thesis and Dissertation Organizing Central. The Dissertation Procedure Manual sends candidates to the Center for Writing Excellence to check that a manuscript follows the style their program requires, such as APA. The Graduate School then reviews it against its formatting requirements. Every doctoral candidate publishes through ProQuest ETD Administrator, and the final copy goes to Sprague Library for Digital Commons.

Before a Montclair State dissertation goes to the Graduate School for format review, or a thesis or seminar paper goes to a committee, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
