Grants and Writing Resources for Morehead State University
A graduate student in Morehead State's Master of Arts in School Counseling program has published Lunchpail Manifesto, a collection of stories from the Appalachian coalfields told through the voices of miners and their families. She built it from first-hand accounts and interviews about mines in Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. The university reported the book in October 2026, and she plans to give copies to Morehead State and other regional colleges with Appalachian Studies programs.
Paid Undergraduate Research
Full-time, degree-seeking undergraduates who have a faculty mentor can join the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program as early as the first year. Fellows earn $10 an hour for up to 20 hours a week over two semesters, or 32 weeks. Craft and Eagle Scholars students are ineligible. Students in the George M. Luckey Jr. Academic Honors Program complete the fellowship as an unpaid requirement at eight hours a week, and honors students also write a substantial exit essay on their program experience.
Every fellow completes CITI training in the responsible conduct of research and attends at least four undergraduate research and creative inquiry events a year. Research costs can go to the Experiential Education Fund. It pays for equipment, software and supplies, for travel, food and housing connected to the experience, and for conferences where students share research with an outside audience. Students apply online.
Where Students Present and Publish
The Celebration of Student Scholarship started in spring 2006 and is now a day-long event of presentations, exhibitions and performances. Research fellows are required to take part, and unfinished work is accepted. Posters from the April 15, 2026 celebration, by students from every college, are archived online. The undergraduate research office also keeps a list of places to present and publish, including the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, the Kentucky Academy of Science's November meeting and the Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Research.
Inscape is the annual literary and visual arts journal that MSU students produce, with a student editor and faculty advisors, through the Departments of English & Modern Languages and Communication, Media, Art & Design. Its first issue appeared in 1957. For the 2027 issue, first place in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction each pays $100. Only MSU students can win the literary prizes, and non-students may submit work for publication.
Graduate Funding and Theses
The Graduate School offers more than 90 graduate assistantships a year. Assistants work an average of 20 hours a week, take at least nine graduate hours each semester and hold a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Teaching assistants also need 18 graduate hours in the subject they teach. Graduate students with a 3.0 GPA are considered for the Major James Scott DeHart Graduate Endowment through the general scholarship application, with preference for graduates of Rowan County Schools.
Thesis guidelines for master's students and capstone guidelines for Ed.D. students come from the Graduate School, which answers questions at graduate@moreheadstate.edu. Morehead State theses and dissertations from 1940 to the present are held in Scholarworks @ Morehead State, a service of the Camden-Carroll Library.
Tutoring
The Tutoring & Learning Center, in 101 Camden-Carroll Library, is free for current students. It runs one-to-one appointments with tutors, drop-in hours, and study groups led by tutors or by faculty. Online tutoring over WebEx is open to all MSU students.
