Grants and Writing Resources for Mount Saint Vincent University
A third-year Business Administration student majoring in marketing was one of eight winners of the 2026 Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies, MSVU announced in February 2026. Business school deans nominated 34 candidates for the awards. He holds a perfect GPA and runs a studio offering videography, photography, graphic design and content creation to Atlantic Canadian businesses. The award pairs him with a mentor as he finishes his degree at the Mount.
Prizes for Library Research
The MSVU Library gives two annual awards for library research, each with a $360 cash prize. The MSVU Introduction to Library Research Award is for students with 15 units of credit or less, and an annotated bibliography can qualify. The Sister Francis de Sales Endowed Award, sponsored by the Alumnae Association, is for students with more than 10 units.
Entrants submit a paper written for credit in an MSVU course along with a research log of search strategies, consultations and reflections on the process. Librarians judge the method and the content, and they also mark grammar, spelling, punctuation and consistent citation.
Money for Conferences
The Deans' Office runs the Student Opportunity Fund, started by an alumna from the class of 1954 and supported by alumnae and friends of the Mount. It reimburses registered undergraduate and graduate students for registration, travel, lodging and poster printing when they present at a conference, normally up to $500 a year. Attending without presenting is normally capped at $150, and study abroad at $700. The application includes a one-page description of the activity and how it relates to the student's studies, plus a statement of support from a full-time faculty member.
Graduate Scholarships and Awards
The Office of Graduate Studies says its graduate scholarships go to students who are registered in the year of the award. Full-time students accepted to a thesis-based program are considered for entrance scholarships without applying. Among awards for students already in a program, the Dr. Marilyn McDowell Graduate Research Award goes to full-time students in Applied Human Nutrition or Family Science and Aging whose research advances health, equity and well-being, with community-initiated or participatory work preferred. The Applied Human Nutrition Thesis Conference Travel Award helps thesis students present at conferences once their proposal and ethics approval are in place.
The in-course scholarships include Graduate Merit Scholarships for full- or part-time students with at least 2.0 units completed, and program awards such as the Child & Youth Study Graduate Endowed Scholarship, which weighs thesis research potential.
The Writing Centre and the Thesis
The Mount Writing Centre in EMF 203, on the Library main level, offers free appointments to undergraduate and graduate students, with online sessions on MS Teams. Tutors help with interpreting an assignment, planning, citing, posters, interview questions for qualitative research, and grammar and style at the sentence level. The centre states that student and tutor work on the text together, so the student learns to do these tasks. Students can book one appointment a week or drop in on Fridays.
Graduate students send the library two PDFs: the final thesis with the committee's revisions, and a signed Thesis Non-Exclusive License Form that lets the library display and preserve the work while the author holds copyright. Copyrighted figures need clearance and personal details come out before submission. Theses then appear in the MSVU e-Commons.
For a final read of a course paper or a thesis before it goes to the library, our editors check grammar, consistency and format. See our Mount Saint Vincent University dissertation and thesis editing and Mount Saint Vincent University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
