Grants and Writing Resources for National Tsing Hua University
Four electrical engineering students at NTHU took second place in the Makalot Industrial track of the 2026 Hsinchu × Meichu Hackathon, a result their department posted to its honor roll in October 2026.
A Writing Prize
The Center for Language Education runs the Writing Competition for College Chinese Courses (大學中文競寫活動) for students in the College Chinese and Basic Writing courses. Entries are judged in a preliminary round and a final round. The center posts winners lists by semester, spring and autumn, from 2015 through autumn 2025.
Project Grants and Conference Travel
Any undergraduate or graduate student with passing grades can propose a project for the Chasing Dreams Scholarship (逐夢獎學金), run by the Division of Student Assistance. Academic research qualifies, as do service and personal challenges. Each plan needs a faculty advisor and a budget. Shortlisted applicants present in person for five minutes and then take questions, and recipients file a final report of at least 12 pages.
The Office of Global Affairs handles conference travel subsidies: a university grant for students attending international conferences, and the National Science and Technology Council grant for graduate students. Under the office's notice for the university grant, students who also hold the council's grant split their costs between the two.
Doctoral Scholarships
The Outstanding PhD Student Scholarship (培育優秀博士生獎學金) pays first-year doctoral students NT$40,000 a month for up to four academic years. The university and the National Science and Technology Council share the cost. Candidates need a top-20% class rank as undergraduates, a master's GPA of 3.76 on a 4.3 scale, or an advisor's recommendation for special performance. A committee chaired by the Dean of Academic Affairs makes the selection, and from the second semester on the advisor reviews each recipient's research before funding continues.
The Office of Academic Affairs keeps a scholarship list sorted by student group: domestic, international, overseas Chinese and mainland Chinese students.
Theses and Defenses
Under NTHU's master's degree examination rules (碩士學位考試細則, last amended October 23, 2025), a candidate files a similarity report with the application for the oral defense. Each department sets the standard for that report, and examiners consult it during the exam. Before the committee's approval form is issued, the student signs a declaration that the thesis meets academic ethics standards. The rules handle any thesis involving fabrication, plagiarism or ghostwriting as an academic ethics case.
Approved theses are uploaded to the university's thesis database, and two printed copies go to the library at graduation. The English Education Center offers students one-on-one consultations on English learning.
