Grants and Writing Resources for National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University
Two NYCU students, one from the Department of Life Sciences and Institute of Genome Sciences and one from the Department of Pharmacy, took first place at the first Abbott Taiwan Youth Innovation Competition, the university reported on October 15, 2026. Their entry, Call 2 Care, is an AI voice service that phones older people with medication reminders, tracks their health and takes reports of new symptoms. It beat teams from Taiwan's medical schools for the NT$100,000 grand prize.
Rewards for Papers and Prizes
The Office of Research and Development runs the Outstanding Student Research Award (學生優良研究成果獎勵) in three categories. One covers wins at academic and professional competitions entered under NYCU's name, provided the competition paid out no cash prize. The second covers paper awards at international conferences on lists set by each college. The third covers journal papers by a first or corresponding author with an NYCU affiliation.
Journal papers count when they appear in the university's benchmark journals or a college's priority journals with a JIF percentile of 75 or higher, or in a journal indexed in the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Awards are scored in points, and the university sets the value of a point each year.
Conference Travel and Doctoral Scholarships
Graduate students presenting a paper can apply for the university's conference subsidy for meetings abroad. Full-time doctoral students qualify once they have applied to the National Science and Technology Council or another outside body for funding. Full-time master's students qualify for conferences on their department's top or important list, with other matching funds in hand. Each paper funds one presenter, and a student can receive the subsidy once a year.
Students who move straight into a doctoral program can apply for the Direct Pursuit of a PhD Degree Scholarship in their first year of doctoral study. It pays up to NT$20,000 a month for one year, in two installments. Applicants need recommendations from their advisor and department chair and either a place in the top 20 percent of their bachelor's class or a master's GPA of at least 3.38.
English Writing Help and Thesis Submission
The Language Self-study Center of the Language Teaching and Research Center runs free English writing consultations for NYCU students. Sessions last 25 minutes. Consultants work on theses, dissertations, journal articles and application essays at any stage from brainstorming to revision, and they teach writers to spot and fix grammar errors. The center states that it does not proofread, edit or translate.
A thesis may be written in Chinese or English, and it carries both a Chinese and an English abstract, each with five to seven keywords. The Office of Academic Affairs notice on degree-exam ethics lists what goes into the library's upload system: the full text with abstracts, an originality comparison report, a signed statement on academic ethics and originality, the approval form and the thesis format form. The printed thesis and the original exam grade sheet go to the Division of Registration. The notice also links the university's format guide, which sets white A4 pages with margins of 2.5 cm at top and bottom, 3 cm on the left and 2 cm on the right.
Before the originality report is run and the final file goes to the library, our editors can give an English thesis or paper a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
