Grants and Writing Resources for Nicholls State University

Twenty-five students in Louisiana won places in the Louisiana Wildlife Federation's 2026-2027 Edgar Veillon Conservation Leadership Corps, and four of them are Nicholls biology undergraduates, three in marine biology and one in environmental biology. Over the year they visit field sites with scientists and policymakers, and they finish at the federation's annual convention as state leaders vote on conservation policy.

Scholars Expeaux

Nicholls held its 22nd Scholars Expeaux in 2026, an exposition of research and creative work by students and faculty. Its program had an Undergraduate Humanities Symposium, a performing arts showcase, a screening of short films and art animation, and culinary demonstrations.

The student poster competition is open to undergraduates and graduate students in any discipline. Scholarships go to the best posters in a range of categories and are added to the student's account balance with the university.

Honors Theses and Funded Research

Students in the Robert E. "Bob" Miller Honors Program write a one-hour Honors Prospectus (HONR 401) and then a three-hour Honors Thesis (HONR 402). The thesis is presented at the University Honors Program Thesis Research Symposium. Honors students also share research at the Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council convention and can apply for honors scholarship funding to study abroad.

Faculty grants also pay for student research. The ORSP lists recent Louisiana Sea Grant awards that support undergraduate research in biology and a Nature Conservancy grant for a graduate student's applied research in the Atchafalaya Basin.

Assistantships and Theses

University graduate assistantships can be held for up to six semesters, and reappointment requires a 3.0 cumulative GPA. In the M.S. in Marine and Environmental Biology, a Graduate Teaching Assistantship pays tuition and a $4,800 stipend each fall and spring semester for 20 hours a week of freshman labs. It goes to students on the Thesis Research track, who write and defend a committee-approved thesis.

The biology thesis guidelines call for name-date citations and Times New Roman 12-point type throughout. The final Word file goes to the Graduate Program Coordinator for format edits and approval, and the coordinator then sends a PDF to Ellender Memorial Library for Theses @ Nicholls State University.
