Grants and Writing Resources for North Carolina Central University
NCCU sent its first all-women quiz team to the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge in 2026, and in April that team won the university's first national championship in Torrance, California. The students went 6-0 in round-robin play. In the deciding game of the final against defending champion Hampton University, they answered all 10 questions in the Ultimate Challenge round. The title brought NCCU a $100,000 grant, and the team is only the third all-women team in the competition's history to win it.
Research Week and GURS
NCCU Research Week ran March 23 to 28 in 2026. It closed on a Saturday with the Graduate and Undergraduate Research Symposium, known as GURS, in the Mary Townes Science Complex. Undergraduate and graduate students from many disciplines presented posters and talks under the theme "Research from a Higher View," and the event was free and open to the public. The day before, the Graduate Programs Fair, run by the NCCU Graduate School with the Leadership Alliance, covered advanced study, summer research and post-baccalaureate programs.
Students who want a project to present can submit the student research opportunities form, which lists active NCCU projects such as the NCCU-Duke Cancer Disparities Translational Research Partnership and the RCMI Center for Health Disparities Research.
Honors Fellowships and Fulbright
Members of the University Honors Program get access to the NC-LSAMP fellowship, an NSF-funded program for underrepresented groups in STEM, and to WomenNC, a 10-month research and mentoring program for young women. Honors students bound for a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. also have access to Leadership Alliance summer research internships at Ivy League and other Research I universities. The Graduate School Exposure Tour takes students to graduate campuses over Fall Break and helps with applications; applicants need a 3.0 GPA, a short personal statement, a CV or résumé and a panel interview. The honors curriculum includes HON 3600, the Honors Thesis Seminar.
In 2025 the U.S. Department of State named NCCU a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader for the third year in a row. Nineteen HBCUs received the designation that year.
Graduate Funding
Departments award graduate assistantships, so students ask their department about openings. A full assistantship pays $4,000 a semester for 20 hours of work a week; a half assistantship pays $2,000 for 10 hours. Holders need unconditional admission to an eligible program, a 3.0 graduate GPA and at least 9 graduate credit hours in fall and spring, and eligibility lasts two academic years. EMPA, online, certificate and non-degree students are excluded. An assistant can also receive the Graduate Tuition Award, which covers the in-state portion of graduate tuition.
For conference presenters, the Graduate Student Association offers travel funding. Its office is in Room 311 of the Taylor Education Building, and the application is among the School of Graduate Studies forms and documents.
Writing Support, the Law Review and Theses
University College runs the Writing and Speaking Studio in Room 102 of the Taylor Education Building. Writing help is free to undergraduates, graduate and professional students, faculty, staff and alumni. Weekday sessions run in person or online, and evening and weekend sessions are virtual and by appointment. Online sessions are live, and the Studio FAQ describes the work as collaborative: the consultant and the writer improve the draft together. The Speaking Studio gives feedback on presentations, nonverbal communication included.
The School of Law's North Carolina Central Law Review is a student-operated journal founded in 1967. It prints articles by scholars, judges and practitioners alongside student notes and comments.
The School of Graduate Studies forms include a Thesis/Project/Dissertation Plan and an Oral Examination Report for master's and doctoral students. The finished thesis or dissertation goes to ProQuest as a single PDF through the ETD Administrator, and the graduate school reviews each submission before it is delivered, as the university's 2021 guide to electronic submission and publishing explains.
Once a thesis, dissertation or Law Review note has its content settled, our editors can check grammar, consistency and format in a final edit. Details are on our North Carolina Central University dissertation and thesis editing and North Carolina Central University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
