Grants and Writing Resources for Northeastern University

Nine Northeastern students and recent graduates won Fulbright awards for 2025-2026, five of them from the class of 2025 and four from the classes of 2022 through 2024. Four will carry out research projects, in Switzerland, Germany, Cambodia and Italy, while five will teach English in Spain, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan and the Czech Republic. On campus, a Base Camp award gives $750 per project to beginners working closely with a mentor.

Research Funding and RISE

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships runs the PEAK Experiences Awards, a set of grants sized to a student's experience. A Base Camp award gives $750 per project to beginners working closely with a mentor, the Ascent award gives $1,500, and the Summit award gives $3,000 per project for independent work the applicant designs. Trail-Blazer pays $6,000 per applicant for full-time summer exploration. Students accepted to present original work at a conference can apply for the Shout-It-Out award, which covers half of travel and lodging, up to $1,500.

Undergraduate and graduate students present at RISE, Northeastern's spring research expo. Accepted presenters hang posters at the RISE Poster Expo in Cabot Cage or give eight-minute talks on panels of five or six during the oral presentation days. There's also a virtual poster gallery.

Prizes for English Students

The English department gives three Peter Burton Hanson Awards for the best work done in an undergraduate English course during the academic year, presented at a reception at the end of spring semester. One prize goes to scholarly writing, one to creative writing, and one to work that fits neither, such as a digital humanities project. English majors, combined majors and minors are eligible.

Graduate students have the Graduate Essay Contest, open to all English graduate and PlusOne students. It has two categories, Literature and Literary Studies and Writing and Rhetoric, and each winner receives $100. Faculty judges read the entries anonymously.

Publishing

Spectrum Magazine is the student-run literary arts magazine, publishing poetry, prose, photography and artwork by Northeastern students, staff and alumni in two issues a year. The English department also lists First & Foremost Literary Magazine among its student publications. It prints writing and visual art by first-generation and low-income students, alumni and faculty.

Doctoral dissertations and master's theses are deposited electronically through ProQuest, and the library then makes them available in its Digital Repository Service. Students can attach supplemental files such as video or data sets. For journal articles, the library's publisher agreements can fully cover or discount article processing charges for Northeastern-affiliated authors.

Graduate Funding and Writing Help

PhD candidates who have spent at least four years in their programs and finished their coursework and comprehensive exams (plus a proposal defense where the program requires one) can apply for a Dissertation Completion Fellowship. It pays one semester's stipend at the program's standard rate and covers the one-credit registration fee and health insurance. For conference costs, Graduate Student Government Individual Funding reimburses up to $375 per academic year.

The Northeastern Writing Center in Holmes Hall is free and open year-round to students, staff, faculty and alumni, with sessions of about 45 minutes in person or online. Graduate students aren't held to the two-per-week limit. Writers bringing a dissertation, thesis or manuscript draft can ask the Assistant Director for back-to-back sessions.

When your draft is close and you want a careful last read, our editors are available. See our Northeastern University dissertation and thesis editing and Northeastern University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
