Grants and Writing Resources for Otterbein University
In March 2026 Otterbein reported that a public health senior had been named the Ohio Society for Public Health Education's Undergraduate Student of the Year. The summer before, she held a research fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital studying racial disparities among children with type 2 diabetes. She has presented at the National Health Disparities Conference at Xavier University of Louisiana, and her distinction project examines mental health, wellness and belonging among Black undergraduates.
Grants and Assistantships
The Student Research Fund backs research and creative work by current undergraduates. SRF Research Grants of up to $400 cover project costs and need a faculty letter of support; a faculty-led committee reviews them. SRF Presentation Grants of up to $400 pay for conference travel. Students presenting at a conference can also seek a READY Immersive Experiences Award of up to $2,500, though the full amount goes only to students with the greatest financial need and the highest-quality applications. Any project with human subjects needs Institutional Review Board approval before data collection starts.
English majors have department money as well. Travel grants of up to $500 support archival or field research, trips to literary festivals and readings, and conference presentations, and book and film grants of up to $100 are awarded each semester.
Master's students can apply for one of the upwards of 24 graduate assistant positions Otterbein offers each year, in offices such as the library and nursing and with athletic teams. Assistants work no more than 20 hours a week and receive a stipend and tuition benefits.
Prizes and Student Journals
Quiz & Quill, the student literary organization, runs writing contests open to any Otterbein student in poetry, religious poetry, fiction, historical fiction, essay and dramatic writing. Its magazine is archived in Quiz and Quill on Digital Commons, from a 1946 spring issue through Spring 2026. Each year the English department also gives scholarships and awards by faculty nomination and vote. Two reward academic prose: the Cassady Scholarship for creative or critical writing and the Myers Award for critical or interpretive writing.
Aegis: The Otterbein Humanities Journal publishes undergraduate scholarly essays and book reviews in history, philosophy, languages, literature, archaeology and related fields. It appears once a year in the spring semester. The Spring 2026 issue carried six essays and eight book reviews.
Writing Help, Theses and DNP Projects
The Writing Center in Courtright Memorial Library, Room 216, holds free one-hour, one-on-one sessions with a Writing Center Assistant, in person or on Teams. Students bring papers from any course, and speeches and presentations too, and can book between 24 hours and 21 days ahead. Graduate and professional students, and honors students finishing distinction theses, contact the Writing Services and Tutoring Coordinator. Librarians and research tutors also take research consultations with graduate students.
Students on the thesis track of the Honors Program take HNRS 3500 in the fall of junior year and HNRS 4500 in the spring of senior year. Approved work goes through the library's thesis and dissertation service. Honors and Distinction papers are deposited in Digital Commons @ Otterbein, and graduate theses go to Digital Commons and the OhioLINK ETD Center. Students run an accessibility check in Word or PowerPoint before converting to PDF and upload the report as a separate file. Finished Doctor of Nursing Practice scholarly projects, master's theses and capstones, and undergraduate distinction papers are collected under Student Research & Creative Work.
Once a distinction paper, DNP project or course essay is close to done, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format. See our Otterbein University dissertation and thesis editing and Otterbein University essay editing pages, or write to editors@editorsforstudents.com.
