Grants and Writing Resources for Palm Beach Atlantic University

Three PBA students took first place at HackaBull, the University of South Florida's 24-hour hackathon, in a field of nearly 200 participants on 58 teams that included graduate and doctoral students. The computer science and computer engineering team built PEPPER from raw components: a headset that reads brainwave signals through a custom analog circuit and uses artificial intelligence to adjust the digital environment to the wearer's focus. The university reported the win in May 2026 as its first at a national hackathon.

Presenting and Publishing Research

PBA held its 15th annual Interdisciplinary Research Conference on March 24 and 25, 2026. Undergraduates, graduate students and faculty present, and the conference counts any scholarly or creative activity as research, from scientific experiments to artistic work. The 2026 program ran oral sessions in 20-minute slots and a poster session in the Warren Library. Over 40 students and nearly 20 faculty took part.

Conference work can go on to publication. Bridges: Spotlight on Emerging Research is a juried proceedings publication for student and faculty research that grew out of the conference; its Spring 2026 issue was the first in an interactive digital format. The older Enlightening Minds Research Review collects a year of faculty, student and alumni research at a time, and its yearly reviews going back to 2013 are listed online.

Fellowships and Research Money

The LeMieux Center for Public Policy runs the Freidheim Fellowship for upperclassmen. Applicants send a research proposal, a résumé and a letter of support from a faculty mentor, then interview. Fellows receive a small stipend to cover the cost of an independent study course and finish with a published paper. The two 2026 fellows presented their research on privacy and discrimination in October.

Science students can join research teams through the Summer Undergraduate Academic Research Program (SUGAR), and PBA says grants are available for research materials, travel and other costs. In October 2026 an electrochemistry group in the chemistry program counted ten undergraduates.

The Rinker College of Business inducted 46 students into Beta Gamma Sigma for 2025-26 and gave a $1,000 BGS Honor Roll Scholarship toward tuition to a student in the business data analytics 3+2 program.

Where Student Writing Appears

Living Waters Review publishes writing and artwork by PBA students and alumni. An English professor founded the journal and advises it, and its editors are English majors in Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society. Issues from 2021 through 2023 are posted online.

Writing Central and Thesis Work

Writing Central is in the lower-level rotunda of the Warren Library and books 30-minute sessions in person or online through WCONLINE. Its peer coaches, many from the Frederick M. Supper Honors Program, help at any stage from brainstorming to proofreading and handle APA, MLA, Turabian and CSE formatting. In May 2026 the Southeastern Writing Center Association gave the center its CARE certification.

Honors Fellows complete 18 hours of honors study, and writing a thesis is one of the ways to earn them. Behavioral neuroscience majors write a senior thesis as a formal academic article. In the Ph.D. in Practical Theology, two years of coursework lead to a candidacy phase of original research under faculty supervision. Projects with human subjects go to the Institutional Review Board, and the Warren Library answers research questions by phone, chat, text and email.

Before an honors thesis, capstone or dissertation reaches a committee, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format.
