Grants and Writing Resources for Pohang University of Science and Technology
At the 17th International Conference on X-ray Microscopy (XRM 2026), held from August 30 to September 4 in Campinas, Brazil, a physics student in POSTECH's integrated master's-doctoral program won one of the four poster awards. The winning poster used time-resolved dark-field X-ray microscopy to image elastic waves as they interact with crystal defects in germanium.
Undergraduate Research and Scholarships
In the Undergraduate Group Research Program (UGRP), small teams of science and engineering undergraduates pick a research question and work it through with guidance from professors or subject experts. Each team can draw up to 2 million won in research funds. After a review of process and results, the best teams may receive scholarships and the president's award.
Every student admitted to POSTECH starts on a full scholarship. Under the scholarship rules, support continues for up to eight regular semesters for students who earn at least 12 credits in the previous semester with a 3.3 grade average or a percentile score of 87. Students who don't hold a Presidential Science Scholarship or a National Excellence Scholarship are selected for the Jigok Scholarship.
Graduate Pay and Support
The graduate school's financial support page sets 2026 standard assistant pay at 1,850,000 won a month for master's students and 2,200,000 won a month for doctoral students, each figure combining a tuition component and a living allowance. Every student receives at least the standard amount in the first semester. From the second semester, pay under the performance-based research assistant system can vary with individual results, and professors may add to the living allowance.
The same page lists the Graduate Living Expense Scholarship for students facing financial hardship or with disabilities. It pays 2.5 million won a year for one year, from funds given by POSTECH, two dental clinics and two named funds. Students may hold internal and outside scholarships at the same time, subject to the rules of any government funder.
Writing in English and in Fiction
The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences teaches Graduate English Writing for Scientific Papers (GEDU501), a two-credit pass/fail elective for graduate students who already have some research under way. Students write a manuscript in sequence, with instructor feedback and the option to revise and resubmit, and they practice summarizing, paraphrasing and citing sources and editing classmates' drafts.
The Communication and Public Discourse Research Institute has run the POSTECH SF Award since 2020, open to science and engineering undergraduate and graduate students nationwide. The institute also holds an SF creative writing workshop and an SF reading group.
Rules for the Degree Thesis
POSTECH's graduate degree regulations, last amended March 1, 2026, require doctoral and integrated-program students to publish at least one first-author paper in an international journal their department recognizes, unless the Graduate School Committee approves an exception. A master's thesis goes before three examiners. A doctoral thesis goes before five, including at least one member from outside the student's department, and in both cases the committee must agree unanimously for the thesis to pass. Every thesis follows the graduate school's separate writing guideline.
A first-author manuscript or a thesis headed for its committee can go to our editors for a final edit covering grammar, consistency and format.
