Grants and Writing Resources for Rowan University

Two Rowan students have won the Department of World Languages' Rosemary Geri '77 World Languages Scholarship, one for fall 2026 and the other for spring 2027.

Writing Arts Prizes and Avant

The Denise Gess Literary Award is open to undergraduate and graduate students in good standing, and one writer may enter more than one genre. Its three categories are the Edward J. Czwartacki Award for Fiction, the Dr. Antoinette C. Libro Award for Poetry and the Pat B. Tweedie Award for Creative Nonfiction, with graduate and undergraduate winners listed separately.

The Department of Writing Arts also gives the Emerging Writers Scholarship and Medallion Awards each year, and M.A. students can receive the Antoinette Libro Scholarship for Excellence in the Writing Arts or the Myra Schiffmann-Bunya Sandler Memorial Scholarship. For print, the department points students to Avant Literary Magazine, which publishes student creative work, and to The Whit, the student-run newspaper.

Posters and Honors Research

Undergraduates in the sciences present at the STEM Student Research Symposium, held every year on the Glassboro campus. Since the 21st symposium in April 2018, their posters have been collected in Rowan Digital Works, and the collection runs through 2026.

The John H. Martinson Honors College takes students from every major. Alongside interdisciplinary and advanced courses, it arranges joint student-faculty research, invited speakers and extended advising.

Graduate Travel and Funding

A graduate student in a degree program who is invited to present research, scholarship or creative work at a conference can apply to the School of Graduate Studies for the Graduate Student Travel Fund. In the 2023-2024 cycle, awards ran up to $600, one per student per academic year, and depended on available money. Students in certificate programs and medical or veterinary school are excluded.

The school's funding opportunities also cover graduate jobs, among them Graduate Assistant, Research Fellow and Teaching Fellow positions, with pay set by the duties and available funds. A separate list gathers outside scholarships, dissertation research grants and travel awards.

Writing Center and Thesis Format Review

The Writing Center holds one-on-one sessions of 30 or 60 minutes, in person or online by video or audio. Graduate students can also use drop-off support: they submit a draft and get written feedback in three to eight days. The graduate thesis manual places the center in Campbell Library, Room 131, and says it can assist at any stage of a thesis, from research to formatting.

Finished theses and dissertations go to the School of Graduate Studies for final format approval through ProQuest ETD Administrator, reached from a Pre-Submittal Workshop in Canvas. The Thesis & Dissertation Manual sets the format. The office does not review content, references, spelling or grammar; the committee is responsible for a document free of typos, and a student who struggles with required revisions is expected to seek help. Approved work is archived in ProQuest and in the Rowan Digital Works theses and dissertations collection, with an embargo available on request.

The graduate office leaves spelling and grammar to the student and committee, and our editors can give a thesis, dissertation or contest entry a final check for grammar, consistency and format.
