Grants and Writing Resources for Saint Joseph's University

In June 2025 Saint Joseph's reported that ten students had won national scholarships and fellowships for the coming year. Three were Goldwater Scholars, two in chemistry and one in biology. The biologist won as a rising junior, which brings two years of funding for lab work on the small RNA molecules that modulate virulence in bacterial pathogens. Another student went to Queen's University Belfast for a three-week Fulbright Summer Institute on divided societies and reconciliation.

Paid Summer Research

The Summer Scholars Program pays a $4,000 stipend for the equivalent of ten weeks of full-time work, roughly 400 hours, on a project supervised by a full-time Saint Joseph's faculty mentor. Projects can come from research, creative writing or the fine and performing arts, and each must be creative and largely independent. On-campus housing cost $1,500 for 2026. Results go into the Summer Scholars book the next fall, and students present at the Celebration of Student Achievement the following spring.

Biology has a second route. The Biological Sciences Summer Research Scholarship funds eight weeks with a faculty member in the department, with a $4,500 stipend and $500 to $1,000 for supplies. Recipients present at USciences Research Day and the CUR Festival.

Research Day and the CUR Festival

The Center for Undergraduate Research holds an Undergraduate Research Festival each year. On April 8, 2026, four students gave talks in the Campion Forum Theater, and the poster list ran to 77 entries from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Haub School of Business, the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and the School of Health Professions. The 2025 festival added an Images of Research and Scholarship contest, with SJU faculty choosing the best image.

Fellowships and Graduate Awards

The Office of Fellowships works with students and recent graduates on domestic and international awards, and the university has been named a top producer of Fulbright U.S. Students three times. Its list of major fellowships includes the Goldwater Scholarship, which supports tuition, room and board, books and mandatory fees for sophomores and juniors who intend research careers in the natural sciences, engineering or mathematics. The Truman Scholarship, for juniors aiming at public service, provides up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school.

Every fellowship on that list requires a nomination from the Fellowships Office. The Saint Andrew's Fellowship funds a full year at one of Scotland's four ancient universities, and the Mitchell Scholarship is a postgraduate award tied to the island of Ireland. Gaither Junior Fellows spend a year working full-time at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC.

Writing Help and Student Magazines

The Writing Center is free to any Saint Joseph's student, staff or faculty member, and local alumni can book time too. Tutors, some of them graduate students, meet writers for 25 or 50 minutes at Merion Hall 162 and a library satellite in the Post Learning Commons on Hawk Hill, at Griffith Hall on the University City campus, or online in a chat-style WCOnline session. Its student resources include scientific writing and English language guides.

Student work appears in The Avenue, the literary magazine of the Writing Studies program, whose archive begins in 2018 and includes a Spring 2026 cover. Crimson & Gray, the university literary magazine, takes photography, digital art and sculpture along with poetry and prose.

Theses and Dissertations

Students in the M.A. in Writing Studies choose a thesis mentor, often from the program's Thesis Advisor List, and need the director and the mentor to sign the title page. The electronic copy goes to ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global at no charge. A single-sided paper copy goes to the English department.

The Interdisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (EdD) is a four-year, 54-credit hybrid program whose curriculum includes dissertation support, and practitioner experts sit in on dissertation committees. Limited graduate assistantships pay tuition and a stipend, and the Furin Scholarship covers one fall course for a first-year student. For finished work, the Francis A. Drexel Library arranges binding of personal and departmental copies of master's theses and doctoral dissertations.

Our editors read Saint Joseph's theses and dissertations at the last stage, before the ProQuest upload or the trip to the bindery, and check grammar, consistency and format.
