Grants and Writing Resources for Saint Peter's University
Two biology students in the Class of 2027 won awards for their research grant proposals from the Independent Colleges and Universities of New Jersey, the university reported in October 2026. One is testing how four antibiotics, alone and in combination, affect regeneration and development in planaria. The other is measuring the effect of bisphenol A on memory in the great pond snail. Both were chosen to present their work at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in April 2027.
Research With Faculty
The Honors Program has paid students to assist faculty with research for about two decades. Honors research assistantships last one semester and depend on available funding, and the work ranges from translating research materials and conducting interviews to preparing manuscripts and running lab experiments. Some of it reaches print: the program's student and faculty research page lists articles and conference papers that faculty wrote with students, in journals such as Qualitative Inquiry and the International Journal of Science Education.
Students with projects of their making can ask the Honors Program for limited funds to attend academic conferences or buy materials for senior thesis work. Honors students in STEM majors can apply for the Frank J. Murphy, Jr. '69 STEM Internship, at least 60 hours of outside fieldwork that counts as a three-credit Honors course. Each Murphy Fellow receives a $2,500 stipend.
Where Student Work Appears
A selection of past Honors theses sits in the university's digital repository, filed as research papers with each thesis advisor named. Topics run from statins and dementia in zebrafish to the mental health of ICU nurses during COVID-19.
The same repository holds issues of The Pavan, the student literary journal of poems, short stories and artwork. Its catalog record lists a run from 1949 to the present.
Writing Help
The Center for Academic Success and Engagement runs peer tutoring in McDermott Hall in Jersey City. Tutors offer writing support and help with every stage of a research paper, along with study skills and reading. Drop-ins are welcome. TutorMe, reached through Blackboard, adds free online tutoring in any subject.
First-year students in the Honors Program skip placement exams and take Honors Writing Composition (CM-102-HP), a one-semester course.
Doctoral Study and the Editing Requirement
Saint Peter's offers online doctorates in education, among them the Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, where each student is assigned a faculty advisor who mentors the dissertation. Educators who finished Ed.D. coursework but not the dissertation can enroll in the ABD completion program, at least 18 credits that include dissertation research and a course on writing the literature review. Students in graduate study can also hold graduate assistantships, university support posts assisting professors with teaching or research, or working in offices such as academic advising.
The O'Toole Library's dissertation support guide makes editing a required step before ProQuest upload. Once the mentor approves the required revisions, the candidate sends the final version to one of two editing services the guide approves, for proofreading, formatting, APA style checking and editing. The program director then approves the edited copy. Uploading to ProQuest also places the dissertation in the university's open-access digital repository.
The edit before ProQuest upload goes to one of the library's two approved services. For course papers, proposals and chapter drafts that come earlier, our editors can check grammar, consistency and APA format before the work goes to a mentor.
