Grants and Writing Resources for Seton Hall University
A sophomore took first place at Pirates Pitch 2026 with Emerald Editor, an AI-powered video editing platform for small businesses and digital creators, and won the $8,000 grand prize plus the $500 Audience Choice Award. In September a student in the School of Diplomacy's M.A. program presented as a Junior Scholar at the 2026 Irregular Warfare Center Scholars Colloquium in Washington, D.C. Ten papers were accepted, and hers looked at medical intelligence and biological early warning in homeland defense.
A Week for Student Research
Seton Hall holds the Petersheim Academic Exposition each year. Undergraduate and graduate students present with faculty sponsors, in poster sessions, oral presentations, symposia, panels, debates, art exhibits and performances. Oral presentations usually run 10 to 15 minutes, with the last few minutes left for questions. The 30th exposition ran April 20 to 25, 2026, and ended with a ceremony of celebration and awards. That year's Time Machines Symposium featured five undergraduates who spent an academic year researching Walsh Library's Special Collections.
Fellowships and Graduate Awards
The Henry Luce Foundation's Clare Boothe Luce Program pays for graduate fellowships for women in Seton Hall's STEM programs. Fellows receive full tuition, University health insurance, a stipend and professional development funds, and the award can be renewed for a second year with satisfactory progress. Seton Hall had eight fellows in 2026-27 and aims for 10 in 2027-28.
Students admitted to a graduate degree program can apply for graduate assistantships, including research assistantships under a faculty member. Assistants work about 20 hours a week and receive a monthly stipend plus coverage for a set number of credits each semester.
For national awards, the Office of Prestigious Fellowships asks students with a GPA of 3.7 or higher to contact its director. Its search tool sorts fellowships by area, from STEM and English teaching to diplomacy and service, and Seton Hall students have gone on to Fulbright, Rangel, Pickering and Boren awards.
Where Student Work Appears
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research takes substantial scholarly papers of 5,000 to 10,000 words from undergraduates in every Seton Hall college. Undergraduate editors from the College of Arts and Sciences review the manuscripts, and the journal asks for writing a non-specialist can follow. Volume 9 came out in 2026 with seven articles.
Locus is one of the journals on the eRepository @ Seton Hall, a publishing service of the University Libraries and Seton Hall Law. The same site carries Arcadia: A Student Journal for Faith and Culture, an annual in which undergraduates write on the Catholic intellectual tradition and contemporary culture, and its journal list includes the Seton Hall Law Review and six other law school titles.
The repository's Dissertations and Theses collection holds graduate dissertations and theses along with undergraduate honors theses and DNP final projects.
Writing Help and Proofreading Rules
The Seton Hall Writing Center works with writers from any field and is open to current students, alumni, faculty and staff. Students book sessions through PirateNet.
Upper-class undergraduates and graduate students who can't come in can use the Online Writing Lab. Papers sent to the OWL come back in two to five business days, depending on length, and it also reads resumes, cover letters and scholarship statements.
Doctoral students in education leadership have a proofreading rule. The Education Leadership, Management and Policy department's handbooks page still posts its Doctoral Dissertation Handbook updated August 2020. After the oral defense, that handbook has each student engage a university proofreader from a list available at the college's Office of Graduate Studies. The proofreader checks spelling, punctuation and APA style.
Before a seminar paper goes to Locus or a thesis draft goes to a committee, our editors can give it a final edit for grammar, consistency and format. In programs that send the defended dissertation to a university proofreader, our edit belongs to the drafts before the defense.
